Duplicate file numbers. Two cameras

I just started using a pair of X Pro 1 cameras and have run into a problem with duplicate file numbers. On the DSLR camera I can rename a folder but I don't see that capability on the Fuji. Any suggestions or am I going to need to rename everything in Lightroom? I've already stupidly lost a couple of files that I really didn't want to lose. Thanks for any advice.

I would choose on camera to reset a couple of times until u have enough of a offset in file number sequence.. Or just simply import the files into different folders, one with a root folder dedicated each xp1, if u don't want to create a script or workflow that renames the files automatically on import.

The second option sounds best. I can rename when importing into LR but I usually load from the card to the desktop and then import to LR or simply file the folder. I can use two folders for this as long as I can keep the cameras straight. I was hoping to rename one of them Henri and the second Willy(Ronis)

Just put something on the camera body to make it easy to identify like a piece of tape on the bottom next to the battery door.

yeah. I have a thumb rest on both of them. I'm gonna spray paint the end of one of them silver. That should help me with several other issues, too. Such as which one I have set up for which use.

When there's a chance of filename duplication, I import one set with a filename changes set to apply a sequence, continue the sequence for each successive set going ino the same folder. Then, I sort them by date-time captured and rename them all in correct time sequence.

If I want to keep the bodies differentiated, I add the body serial number as a keyword on import (unless it is already apparent in the EXIF data).

Just as a tip for anyone else going through this problem, a user over at the Fuji X Forum suggested a program called A Better File Rename. It lets you customize and change the name of a batch of files without affecting exif data or anything else. I downloaded ($20) and it worked flawlessly.

For Mac, I use BatchFileRename. It was something likewise-in-price 😉 and has worked flawlessly for several years on my Mac Mini now.

In Nikon DSLRs you can set up a prefix for the filename, which I have always found very useful. I did regret to find it absent in my Ricoh GXR when I received that.

Another method is to import the files into Lightroom using an import rule that will add a prefix, and use different prefixes for both cameras. But, you gotta be a Lightroom user to do so... and it still doesn't remedy the file-overwriting issues you get into when you switch cards in two cameras while both cards still have some files on them and the filenames are identical!😱

I'm pretty sure that Lightroom automatically prevents over-writing files on import by adding a '-1' to the end of the file name. Obviously you would want to test this before relying on it...

I just checked Kirk's advice and it worked for me. Lightroom appears to append the name of different files (images) which have the same file name and file type with a number, such as '-2'. For me, this worked if the 2 images are actually different, but have the same file name and file type, and the 'don't import suspected duplicates' box was checked while copying (importing) to a new folder location. Lightroom seems to use embedded file information other than the file name / file type to know that they are different files / images. Best make sure this method works for you too before using it in case it is some other settings in LR on my mac that gives this result - martin
