Wouldn't it be fantastic of someone out there could figure out how to incorporate this type of beneath hot show technology with an optical viewfinder like we are accustomed to with rangefinders and wide angle lenses to tell us shutter speed, focus and what not using LCD technology like what Nikon uses in its viewfinders for making lines and focus points appear where you want them?

coupling a mechanical zoom mechanism to a u4/3 mount lens would be problematic, since the u4/3 lenses use internally focussed elements, nothing moves on the back of the lens flange with which to couple.

Why would it need anything on the back to couple? This is not the 1970s anymore 🙂 It's got an electronic coupling. You can read out the focal length from the lens and zoom your viewfinder. This has been built into the Micro 4/3 spec from day one.

Whether it makes sense to put an optical viewfinder on an EVF camera is another matter...

Yeah the shutter should be near instant if in MF or prefocused - they use the same system as the oly DSLRs which are very responsive. The shutter actually has 3 actions (close, open, close) which slows it down a little (talking milliseconds here) but otherwise it shouldn't have any lag.

I think the EP1 was probably brought out at the moment it was to coincide with the Pen anniversary. The rough edges were an unfortunate by-product of that rush. Maitani might not have approved. The camera was still a semi-breakthrough in design though, and I've seen a surprising number of them around NYC, typically on the wrists of female (a market sector with low numbers in standard-sized DSLRs) Japanese tourists.

Is built in flash such a big deal? Funny to hear it mentioned so frequently on a rangefinder forum. Not a critical statement - just that I am surprised at how frequently it is mentioned.

I suspect that Olympus is actually pretty happy with the way things are going.

It was surprising to read in a PDN review of the EP-1 that lack of a built in flash was a negative for the Pro photographer.

You know, I hope the EP-2 comes out. I am very interested in m43, but at the same time... I have to have a viewfinder that gives me an idea on coverage for the shot and I don't want to buy a m43 camera... and not be able to use four thirds lenses. Currently, I would probably by a GH1 or GF1. But that inability to use my four thirds lenses is freaking stupid.

What the heck is the difference between manual focus and prefocus? 😕 As long as AF isn't involved, shouldn't shutter lag be the same whenever you press the button?

Manual focus is when you have the focus system set to manual focus and do a full press of the shutter button. Basically it is the time it take the camera to meter the scene and stop down plus any shutter lag.

Pre-focus is when you are using autofocus and half-press the shutter and wait for focus confirmation (or use the AF-Lock which can be assigned to the AEL/AFL button). It is the time between the half-press and full press of the shutter and while it is pretty much doing the same things as when using manual focus, the time is usually a little quicker than most cameras take for manual focus.

The GF1, in any event, is very very snappy with legacy lenses, as there is no stopping down involved. I've been using mine with Pen lenses about half the time and have no complaints about it, even compared with the M2 and M7 as my usual film shooters.

If I'm not misundertstanding you in the second part of your sentance you agree with me.😎 The only thing that seperates us is wording.🙂

Everyone seems to like compact design of Oly, while buying Panasonic's performance 😀.

Well, the 7-14 is wider and has a constant aperture. But perhaps the 9-18 will come in at a much lower price?

All I wanted to say, that majority of advanced users seem to be looking for lenses more to the tune of likes of m lenses rather than slow consumer zooms. Just like in case of 20/1.7 vs 17/2.8. Currently Panasonic is more aligned to those demands/wishes than Oly. Your decision to go with 7-14, if I'm understanding it right, just proves it.

A minor upgrade to something that should have already been there. Talk about being kicked in the face by Olympus.

Poor fool the person who didn't spot the EVF wasn't there on the EP-1 in the first place! What the heck do they expect if they can't read the spec sheet?

As for being kicked in the teeth by Olympus, I think this would be so if the camera refused to make any pictures after 5th November, and if the EP-2 was the same price bundled with the EVF. Otherwise the EP-1 still makes photographs, its just a brave person that is needed to admit they don't have the latest camera any more and sign off to the bragging rights to somebody else (so it may give them time to take photographs with their obsolete EP-1).

Alls I was saying is, it doesn't look nasty to me, it looks pretty nice. But unless it's really inexpensive, I prefer the specs of the Panasonic, and will save up for that one.

I like the 20/1.7 very much, but I'm not looking for m4/3 to replace my M system--rather, it is replacing my DSLR.

That EVF is pretty big - it will be super interesting to see what it's like in use. I'm betting it's a massive revelation on the PEN sized camera.

Oh yeah, that 9-18mm lens is absolutely tiny. Looks to be only twice the length of the 17mm pancake, which is miniscule for an 18-36mm equivalent. Should compare it to my 17-40mm f4L - would shock many people.

Apparently Olympus is going to be releasing a lens road map in the next few days as well - I hope hope hope hope hope hope there are at least 2-3 fast primes on it. As soon as olympus commits to some decent primes I'm in. Hell, if they brought out some decent fast primes for their regular 4/3rds system I'd be in with that too.
Primes are all that's missing.

I actually have an M mount holga lens. I saw that someone had made one, and contacted him and he put one together for me for $60. It's a pain to use but once I do go into m4/3 land, I look forward to being able to see it "focus" on my GF-1

I guess it's just like all the other rumors.... I'll look at it when it hits the market. All the specs will be set in place, and I will then know what I'm being asked to purchase.

Now, about that Holga digital... anyone seen one. Is it going to be FF and will it compete with the M9 on ISO and lens abberation.
