eBay Stylus 80 may be a dud... Help!

Today I received an Olympus Stylus 80 I won for the tidy sum of 99 cents (shouldn't complain right). Put a new battery in and it fired right up. Everything seemed to work fine until I put a roll of film in and pressed the shutter button. It snapped a picture then proceeded to rewind the roll as if it was on the last frame. Now that is all it will do. Open the cover and it rewinds. Close the cover it rewinds.... open the back and close it and... you guessed it!, it rewinds. It's the amazing rewind camera.

The display shows a full battery gauge and the number 25 when the cover is open.


Any guesses? is this something that can be reset? Or do I have a new shelf display piece?😱

oh... but the XA I won works great and I have a Bessa-L with 25mm Snapshot Skopar on the way!

There is a small manual film rewind button on the bottom of the camera, check to see if that is stuck. But I doubt that that is the problem, if the counter reads "25" when the camera is empty.

Have you tried removing and replacing the battery?

Checked both of those with no luck. It will rewind when the manual rewind button is pressed and it does not appear to be stuck.

Try a different roll of film maybe?

Tried three.... I did get it to do something by moving the door latch while to door was open. The lens extended and it will zoom, take pictures, and change mode settings but it will not load or advance film.

it is now flashing an "E". the kiss of death....

No, E is good. It means "Empty" on the Stylus. Try holding the door shut and exercising the door latch, there may be dirty contacts in the switch there that are causing your problems.

That was it! After a few minutes of exercising the latch it loaded the film and now apears to be working.
