ELCAN replica lens posts

Beautiful and evocative images Emile, and, very sharp (at the center)! When I tested the ELCAN replica prototype against the 50/2 APO Summicron Asph, the center with the ELCAN was the equal, with perhaps even more contrast, to the 5/2 APO. My article showing this will be published in the next month or two in LHSA's Viewfinder, but I had posted a pdf link here earlier.

No one really cares, for images like this, if the twigs on the ground are optically a hash, even more than their being OOF. Most often, this behavior of the ELCAN is hidden in the OOF DOF blur. The APO Asph Summicron of course does not do this. But I would much rather carry around a light little lens like the ELCAN for grab shots and street shooting, as it is really superb at these tasks.

Nice shots ED. Lots of snow up where you are! Cute pups too!
Hey..
Can you do a quicky comparison between the 50 APO and the LLL Elcan?
That would be cool to see..

Look at the smearing of the dried dill plant at the far left on the ELCAN at f/2. The look at the same area of the 50 Apo ASPH, where some of the seeds are in focus. That is my major take-away about the ELCAN, but if the periphery is not important to the image, as with informal portraits or street photography, the ELCAN fairs well in the comparison IMO. Perhaps the 50AA has more contrast and a bit more sharpness here in the center. Most of my portrait work with the ELCAN has been done at f/4 or faster.

Thx for that Ed!
The APO has more contrast as well as resolution in the corners and edges thats for sure.

Not thinking of the price ticket the APO clearly is the winner then.
Perhaps the LLL shows field curvature.

No, it seems to be unsharpness of the LLL. Perhaps Ed has pictures with the LLL at f/2,8 or f/4,0 too.

And here it is at f/5.6 - an improvement, but still not good at the edges. Basically the same formula was also used for a 90/2.8 Elmarit, where the edge performance did not matter since it was cut off.

When we use the ELCAN replica, it has to be for subjects where only the center portion is vital (and there it performs very well). This was also likely all the military needed for their contract.

IIRC the 50/2 Summicron that was contemporary with the ELCAN had 6 elements, and the current 50/2 APO Summicron Asph has 8. The ELCAN has 4 elements; that is part of its allure, at least for me. It is small and light, feels on an M-camera more like a 35.
