Elmar-M 50mm 2.8 II

Extending what jaapv said, I think the image quality improvements of the Elmar-M show even on film. Another advantage compared to my LTM 50/3.5 is it focuses to .7m instead of 1m. Here the sharpness at that distance is demonstrated on my M2, the only film body I have that will allow .7m rangefinder coupling.
Of course the latest Elmar can focus closer, and this is useful in some situations, but my personal opinion is that too much has been sacrificed in the way of size and weight to provide a lens which, certainly for my purposes, is only marginally improved.

I will continue to use and enjoy the newer Elmar, but the older lens has been an absolute revelation to me. Perhaps it's an "age" thing? :D

Jaapv, thank you for your very informative last post.

I own a 1946 Elmar 50/3.5 and now a 1997 Elmar-M 50/2.8. One of the biggest differences I can see is that the new one is bitingly sharp and contrasty at f2.8 and extremely resistant to flare, as shown above my son's helmet in this shot with the Elmar-M on the M3. I also enjoy shooting the original Elmar on my Leica III for that Barnack feeling.

very nice! very sharp and contrasty indeed! I like how it draws
Sort of solid and elegant

Curiosity got the best of me and I have one of these on the way. In the last year or so I've found myself really intrigued by this lens and wanting to try one for myself. I liked the rendering style and I'm looking forward to working with it!

Just got mine in the mail and I'm already in love with it. So much easier to focus than my Summilux ;)

(That Summilux better earn its keep or it's going on the block!)
