Hello,

Does anyone of you use the Elmar-M on the Zeiss Ikon? I have just bought a silver ZI and I am thrilled with it and would like to put a nice chrome Elmar-M on it.

Does it collapse completely in the body?

Thanks for any info, Horea

I agree, but the lens was designed some 20-60 years for a different camera system therefore I am personally not bothered with it.

Ciao

Word is the current elmar M does indeed collapse all the way into the body, but you should be damn careful the first couple times you to it just to get a feel for it. I was looking at a elmar m in a store for my bessa r2a, the lens would collapse into the body just fine but at infinity it was very very close to the metal protection grove right in front of the shutter.

My advice, try before you buy, or buy used, if it doesnt work, sell it for what you bought it for.

Good to know! Thanks! I know the current Elmar collapses also on the M8, so I thought it should do the same on the ZI.

Ask and you shall receive...

Attached is a photo of the current Elmar-M 50/2.8 on a Zeiss Ikon with the lens collapsed.

You can see that the rear of the lens tube strikes a ledge at the back of the Ikon camera body. It does this when the focus ring reads most any distance greater than 0.7m. Striking this ledge prevents damage to the shutter.

However, striking this ledge is why I do not carry my Zeiss Ikon with an Elmar-M 50/2.8 collapsed. Repeated strikes on this ledge will likely remove paint and might produce debris that could enter the shutter. As you can see I have enough trouble with dust let alone shards of aluminum.

BTW, the same situation occurs with my Bessa R2a.

Jason,

Thank you so much for the photo!! I am a bit torn as to what to do: buy a elmar-M, which I intended to use as my walkaround and carryalong lens, or a Planar...This seems to tip the balance to the Zeiss lens...

Horosu,

I carry a ZM 50/2 Planar on my ZI and the Elmar M 50/2.8 rides on my Leica M2. I find the Planar top notch along with the ZM 35/2 Biogon.

Not to muddy the waters any further but the images posted here and elsewhere from CV Heliar 50/2 look really excellent. The lens configuration looks to be of a similar type to the Elmar which might get you closer to the look you might be after with the Elmar. And as I understand it, the Heliar safely collapses into ZI's, CV Bessa's, and of couse, Leicas.

I think I might go the Planar way and use my Summicron 35 on the M2...As to the Heliar, I was under the impression that its performance was not up to that of the other 50/2's

I don't know why people think that the Classic Heliar is a soft lens with mediocre performance. In his review, Herbert Keppler found it as sharp as a Summicron-M (refer to this thread: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33447).

Well,

I just held a Elmar-M (chrome, superb) today and was carried away by its looks (I know, I know...), so I bought it and it does, indeed, as Jason mentioned, collapse all the way only when the focusing ring is at minimum focusing distance (0.7 m). On my M2 it collapses just fine. I am very much looking forwad to my first roll of film with it!!

Thanks for all the advices, Horea
