Leica LTM Elmar questions

Leica M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
Doesn't the Argus C3 use the same size filters? Typically find them for next to nothing, Walz brand are very common.

Yeah, the Walz set for the Argus C-3 fits both the 50mm and 35mm f/3.5 Elmars. (not sure if it wil cause corner shadow on the 35mm though)

Here's a 1926 Leica;

What a beautiful Leica I, David! Amazing! Is it really from 1926? That is surprising, because the vulcanite of this example seems to be cut, so that the lens mounts directly on the metal of the housing, in this case with a spacing ring. This is usually only seen on later Leica I's, around 1930. Could be that I make a wrong interpretation of the photograph. Older Leicas usually have their lenses mount on the vulcanite, not directly on the metal. The lens itself however looks correct for the year 1926.

Erik.

Hi,

I wish I knew. The vulcanite seems too good to be true and I suspect the top and bottom plates have been very carefully repainted as you can see it fading away to leave the engravings in place and a little brassing here and there.

The number - if correct - would be for 1926. Of course, if the 4 digit number should be a five digit one then it would be a 1930 model 1, assuming the end digit was covered up. It's not in the picture but it has a mushroom shutter release, without the dimple. So a good fake, perhaps...

The trouble is, at that age, the thing could have legitimately been worked on several times.

Luckily it works so I'm inclined to let sleeping dogs lie. Sooner or later I'll get it checked and serviced as the lens is beginning to feel a little stiff when focussing. We might find out something then.

Regards, David

I've tried different set ups with a 50mm Elmar over the years. I've now settled on the Leitz screw in 19mm filters (if you're patient you can find them on ebay - yellows and greens turn up quite a bit), VOOLA aperture setting ring and FISON hood - earlier version without screw, so it's quick to turn the hood and adjust the aperture.

I found the A36 filters a pain. I also tried the aperture setting VALOO hood - but found it quite heavy on the small lens...

I always understood the heavy VALOO hood was really for darkroom use.

Michael

(There is a much lighter and more compact aperture setting hood made by Cook and Perkins that will also take a filter glass if needs be).
