Hello,

it's my first post here, I have been lurking a few months now and decided to sign up some days ago. Been in the RF trade before (Canon-style) and have been thinking of returning ever since I sold the Canon in a fit of... uh... unsanity. :D

Now, I have been looking around for a solution to my little challenge: finding a way to use filters on my Elmar while still being able to change apertures. For a few nights I have been trawling the archives here. Bear with me, I am trying to figure the funny codes for accessories too... It seems as though there are three ways to do this:

1. use a 36 mm clamp-on filter and get a free lesson in patience, as you have to do the "take filter off, adjust aperture, get the filter on again" routine.

2. get a VOOLA and use 36mm clamp on filters. Nice, but where to find one cheap? I have seen one now on the 'bay which has BIN of $110. Yes, the word "hilarious" springs to mind. For chrissake, it's just a piece of metal. :D Couldn't someone thrifty make new ones to sell?

3. Get the smaller sized filters. (18mm size?) Those that are put onto the barrel of the lens itself. I guess these are pretty rare.

So, what's the best (and least expensive) option? Does the VALOO hood work with the 36mm filters? If I am flogging the proverbial dead horse - point me in the right direction. I really don't need anything more than a yellow filter, and if I have to, I'll survive using option 1, but...

The least expensive options are 1 and 3. All you need for 1 (as well as the filter) is the SOOGZ clamp-on - $15-20 on eBay. The best solution is 2. Its not a perfect world is it? ;)

Welcome to the forum BTW! :)

Welcome to the Leica Home for Wayward Photographers, Jerevan, where all prayers are eventually answered, although you may fade away --like your avatar -- before help arrives...The solution I found for the first part of your search -- the filter -- is to hunt for the filters that fit on the old Argus C-3 camera lens known as The Brick; they're the same size and have the same thread as the 50mm/3.5 Elmar lens.

Then, if you can find the right hood -- the Valoo -- it will activate the diaghram lever with the filter in place...The difficult part is not finding the Valoo but in finding it, as you said, without breaking the bank...But if you're persistent and post your wants here and on other Web sites, like the LUG, the MUG, the IDCC and elsewhere, even the PLUG, someone might step forward and sell you one fairly inexpensively...Need I say you should also try Ebay; sometimes they are reasonable there, too...The Argus C-3 filter might cost $5usd...If you get the mount with the wrong glass, you can have any optometrist put a yellow filter in the mount...I hope that helps...regards, bob

Thanks Peter,

the world doesn't seem to be perfect, at least not when it comes to Elmars and filters. :)

Jerevan, I just thought of a better {inexpensive} solution: (1) Buy the Argus C-3 filter; there's a set on Ebay now for $8 and change...{2} Get any hood that fits on the Elmar and you can move the diaphragm by just reaching in...regards, bob

Well, wayward is the direction home, I guess. ;) Thank you for the ideas about where to find the filters. I have a couple of leads to two VALOOs and in a few days I'll know what they cost. Most likely a fortune or two. :D

And as for my avatar tomato, only time will tell if it's rotten or not. At least it's Leica red, right? :p
