Embedding lens data into exif

I am using many different lenses with my R-D1s.
I am starting to mix up which lens was used to take which particular photo.

Is there an easy way of embedding the lens name into the exif of jpg?

I have three 28mm lenses, and it's starting to get tough.
I could divide my images into different folders for different lenses,
is there a better way?

If the lens info is important info to you, why not put it in the file name?

I'm not sure if there is a standard EXIF tag for the lens used. Lightroom for example is able to detect the focal length range of a PowerShot G5 by reading the (proprietray) EXIF maker note. For a Penty Optio S4i it only shows the focal length of the the current shot. But the type of the lens isn't shown for both. Maybe that is different with modern DSLR lenses.

If you can live with IPTC data it maybe sufficient to use the keywords section. Keywords could be set in batch mode with for example Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.net/). But the suggestion of marking your files via the filename also seems to be a viable solution.

There are a number of free programs that allow you to edit your exif info. In theory, you could create the exif while scanning and (if your scanner software wouldn't allow you to modify the correct line of exif data) update the exif when finished using the stand alone exif editor.

In practice I have the same problem as you - several lenses swapped out during one roll. I keep a small moleskine journal in my camera bag and write about that day's light/photos/film/lens combinations whenever I think it will matter - also helps with dates and names. I've been putting that info into my Flickr tags, but that obviously doesn't help me keep my local image archive any better. I wonder what the prolific shooters do? Big database keyed to numbered slides in a file cabinet?
