Robin, thanks for this. Do you have any comparison of the post-firmware AF performance. Is it on par with the NEX or Fuji X line?

I can only compare it to the Samsung NX cameras I had previously and I've noticed no difference in focussing speed, just nicer colour in the resultsRobin, thanks for this. Do you have any comparison of the post-firmware AF performance. Is it on par with the NEX or Fuji X line?
IMO with the EOS M present models it's best not to think of them as DSLR replacements but as a sort of digital replacement for a rangefinder, that way you won't be disappointed by trying to use it for action etc. I would certainly be frustrated by the M if it were my only camera and I couldn't use an SLR when needed.
Just for fun and for those curious about the obscure Canon EOS M, this was only the second pic taken with mine after unboxing (pre firmware update) - everything on "auto". 22mm f2.2 1/30 ISO320

well, i just bought an m body with the 22mm lens, extra batteries and the photodiox grip...been looking on flickr at images taken with this combo and it's very impressive. i want a small pocketable camera but one that is highly capable and i think this might be it. i doubt i will use the grip though as i want to keep it as small as possible. no plans for extra lenses or adapters etc...want to keep it simple.
and now it's just the wait on shipping...
Congrats. I think you will really like it. I went overboard and bought the wide angle zoom, the kit zoom, the adapter and a couple of EOS lenses. The wide angle zoom is truly excellent but the rest was so unnecessary.
When you get it take some time to familiarize yourself with the menus and touch screen operation. I feel this camera works differently than other cameras I've used. Canon did a great job on touch screen interface but, for me, it took some getting used to.

yeah, the touch screen will be a different thing for me as well...but i find that any camera i own is set up at the beginning and then mostly left untouched.
the exposure and focussing will be strange, i think, with the touch screen...
i just like the idea of the apsc sensor in that tiny body!
i can see me treating this set up like i would have the sony rx1...

i spent much of the morning reading up on the eos m...interesting stuff...amazing how much the 'reviews' warmed up after the price dropped.

Think Different
The EOS-M has become my all-purpose, carry-everywhere, digital camera. The camera/22mm lens combo makes for a very compact package. It fits great in a daypack or in the large pocket of my winter coat. Not the fastest AF around, but image quality is superb. I bought mine a few years back for $300.00 when B&H had their EOS-M fire-sale. I’m glad I did.

right now, i carry the canon sd780 and/or the panasonic lx3 every day to work & back, to the store or just running errands...the plan is to now carry the eos m/22 in their place.

and now, some important questions...
straps?
the m has it's own unique strap lugs...what do folks use for a strap or better still, a wrist strap?
what's the oem strap like?
i have not seen a pic of the 22/2 lens with a hood...i'm guessing no hood was in the box?

Can't help you with the strap question as I just carry my cameras round in camera bags, take 'em out and put 'em back in. A strap might be good idea for the EOS-M though as it's so small and slippery.
The official hood for the 22mm is the Canon EW-43 (no, it's not in the box, you have to pay extra), I bought the JRC equivalent on ebay, keeps the lens small and works well most of the time. The pic below is the one time the hood didn't help but that was with the sun in the frame

still wondering about straps and cases for the m...
anyone wear it on a belt?
i'm guessing that most folks shoot it w/o a hood?

no one wants to talk about the eos m today?
wondering if anyone has put an aki asahi cover on their m? did it help in gripping the camera? aki seems to only have the one type of skin available...

I bought the original Canon half case and while it did improve the grip it had to be removed to get at the battery/card door so I sold it.no one wants to talk about the eos m today?

Then tried a smart Chinese grip that doubled as a tripod mount but although it allowed access to the card door it wouldn't allow me to fit my 3rd party EF-M to EF adapter (used for the 40mm pancake). I believe a part can be unscrewed from the genuine Canon adapter that would cure this problem.
There is a rubbery silcon EOS M fit case on Amazon etc. which people say improves the grip a lot and would provide protection.

thanks robin!
i have looked at some of the accessories available for the m but am on hold waiting to see the actual camera in my hand first.
using it in winter should be ok, lots of room in winter coat pockets...summer will be different...i'd like to figure a way to carry it around at work without it sticking out like a sore thumb...something that attaches to a belt would be ideal...i'm thinking that the camera won't fit all that comfortably in a pants pocket. using a long strap won't do...i might make a wrist strap out of the canon strap.

very nice, jason.
the weird camera strap posts on the sides, which require a specialized clip to use, are annoying. at least the camera comes with a neck strap that has the specialized clips on it. i took one of the clips off the neck strap, and attached a cheap wrist strap to it - the clip has a slot you can a slide strap through. sorry for the bad cellphone pic. works okay, hasn't fallen off yet.
you're right about it not being a good pocket camera. aside from size, as someone else said it's actually pretty heavy. small and dense, very solid.

i didn't realize that the clips allowed for strap removable...thought i would have to cut one off and sew it to a wrist strap, this is much easier...thanks!

i wasn't aware the m2 is going for low prices on ebay, i'm curious if the AF is really that much better. i don't remember seeing anyone on RFF with an m2, though with these low prices that may change.

Yes, it's been out for a year, but the European market only. I just bought mine from Japan for $369 shipped, body and (useless in the U.S.A.) warranty card ONLY.so...there's an m2?

AF is slightly improved in my opinion, but AF and the EOS M never was an issue for me.
The M2 is slightly smaller in dimension and weight, has wi-fi and used the T5I sensor. In my opinion, the original M has a better feel ergonomically than the M2.
I have done side-by-side image comparisons between the M & M2, and IQ is virtually identical. I see the RED channel in the M2 raw files is toned down slightly from the M.
I would say that unless you are an EOS M devotee such as I, you can skip on the M2 for now...
