Hello all, I am in sticky wicket

I left my XP laptop out in the rain and had to get a new one; now they come with MS Vista only, and there is no Epson 3179 s/w for scanning negatives on Vista.

I have been shooting through Jupiters onto bw400cn with a Bessa R (for the most part) and since my "boo-boo" I have a huge backlog of negatives to scan.

I learned that Epson supplies only the driver and rudimentary scanning software; the negative scanning seems to come from Newsoft.com, so I contacted them, but they did not answer.

I looked at Sliverfast as an option (the orgininal Epson s/w worked fine for me), but they seem to have all their s/w upgraded EXCEPT for the 3170. When I got the scanner a year ago I believed it was very commonly used, and as good as the newer models (according to a German magazine review).

I am grasping for a solution -- short of buying another scanner!:bang:

How long ago did you buy the new computer...

How long ago did you buy the new computer...

If at all reasonable... TAKE IT BACK!!!

You have only scratched the surface of why you do NOT want Vista!

It is not clear in the market place how one must go about getting Windows XP, but most of the manufacturers are flying in the face of Microsofts edict cutting off sales of XP. In fact, Dell (and others) have flatly stated that they will continue to sell XP at a $50 upcharge, while they are now still selling XP on the Vostro line.

VISTA is doomed to be replaced by the new Windows 7 currently being developed. Windows XP has had support extended to the year 2014. Microsoft just issued the new service pack III for XP, while just prior issuing SP1 for VISTA, which did little if anything to assist in the problems with VISTA.

Some people with deep pocket,... ie. As much RAM as Possible and the fastest processors claim to have no problems with VISTA, but most of those people aren't really taxing the system in ways the make the performance issues obvious.

I just helped three clients last week buy two new Dells and one new Toshiba Tecra with Windows XP.

Granted that Windows XP suffers from a 3 Gb RAM limitation, that is often more than many need.

I have also reverted a number of computers from VISTA to XP, but that's a laborious and costly process, involving buying a new separate operating system and searching the internet for device drivers for the components in the new system.

Or, buy a new scanner and wait for the next axe to fall. How does your printer work?

I think there should be act of congress for backward compatibility. In fact the goverment is actually one of the biggest resisters.

Don't have one, they are the weakest link in the chain. I just upload to the web.

When I need prints -- trust me -- they will be on photochemical paper !!

There is a tryout version of Vuescan, so you can see if it works before you buy it. Not much to loose.

Edit: Oh, and good luck!

Thanks for the advice; I will look into it. Old school processing is looking better and better everyday.

What am I missing here? Why don't you just download the lastest version of the Vista driver for your scanner?
