The world’s only digital rangefinder camera, the Epson R-D1, has extended its special role with the current Epson R-D1s model. The new functions allow for low-noise, format-filling photos, optimal image preview and extended color spaces. Owners of an R-D1 will also benefit from the improvements. They just need to install a firmware update which will be available for download from the 1st of June.

Yeah, but is the R-D2 lurking out there waiting for its unveiling at Photokina, huh?

I seriously doubt it. Seeing how poorly the R-D1 has sold over the past 2 years, and how many units are still unsold, and with the digital M on the way, I don't think we'll see an R-D2 very soon. I even doubt whether we'll see one ever.

Agreed. I understand there are no plans to release it in the US. Any truth to that? Hard to believe, and I would finally try and get one. Love the film RFs but digital would make life much easier. Any one know what the price will be?

I've never seen an RD-1 in the flesh, but if it's true that the build quality is like a Bessa, I'm not surprised it didn't sell well for $3000. Now, a full-frame digital Zeiss Ikon for that price, or maybe $1000 more, would make sense. I'd save up and buy one.

Also note this RFF thread in which several of us have been discussing the features and performance of the firmware-updated R-D 1.

Somewhere in the thread there's also a direct link to the download page.
