EuroMeet 2012 - Istanbul

Ok, let's not complicate things and move the dates. 14-15 it still is.

I'll be flying out from Luton (Easyjet) on Friday 13th April (06:30 takeoff), if anyone wants a lift to the airport from the SE, ping me a message.

Hi Everyone
I think you need some information about Istanbul. Istanbul is a really big city with approximately 15 million people. When you look a map of Istanbul, you can easily liken it a rectangular. This rectangular is divided into two by Bosphorus. The most popular living areas are located around Bosphorus. The length of the Bosphorus is approximately 31 km (19 miles). There are two airport and these are located at the far edges of rectangular. "Atatürk Airport" is located at European side and "Sabiha Gökçen Airport" is located Asian side of Istanbul. Both airport is located almost same distance to Bosphorus.
After these brief information, I suggest you to select a location to host. If you arrange hotels far to each other, meeting at a place will be very problematic.
There are mainly two touristic location. One is Sultanahmet and the other is Taksim. There are lots of hotel options in these areas. I suggest you to select an hotel around Taksim in the means of transportation. Taksim is heart of the public transportation. In addition there are shuttle services from both of airport to Taksim. The names of shuttle companies are "HAVAŞ" and "HAVATAŞ" and fees to Taksim is around 5 euros (8 dolars). It is comfortable and easiest way to go airport.
I try to answer if you have any question.
See you soon

did you find anything in terms of accommodation already?

Since I live in Istanbul, I think I don't need to book a flight or a hotel :) But wearing a conical hat.... I need to think...

Welcome everybody. We will be waiting for you.

Hum hum, the location means that I might actually make it, there are daily flights from Central Asia. Need to check whether it's feasible work-wise.

did anyone find something cheaper than ~30€ per night per person (hostel/hotel-wise)?

~22€ was the cheapest I could find on HostelWorld for a private single room. Airbnb is another option, if we are a few people willing to share an apartment.

I'll be on the move this spring anyway so going to my first RFF meet is very tempting :)

Hmm, I don't go with the family. We choose Prague. So, I migth join after all. Lets find out how much airmiles I need.
okay, is feasible but no direct fligths. Seems to be a pain to get from Holalnd to Istanbul. Not sure yet.

I would do that but you need to convince my wife that you are a little baby :) But I doubt that because she takes care of my 10 months daughter already :):)

Where in Istanbul are we going to be? The two times before, I stayed in hotels which were quite far from each other.

As said before, the most popular places all turists would visit are Taksim and Sultanahmet. Each places have a lot of hotels and hostels. If the tour will take 2 days, I think Taksim would be better. Because there are thousands of places for night (bars.. etc). Either way the tour can be organized accordingly. In my opinion from Taksim through all Beyoglu to Galata tower and Karaköy, then to Eminönü through Galata bridge is an option. After that we can stop by for short shopping to Hayyam Pasajı at Sirkeci (which is the center of Istanbul's photographic community) and there are several places you can buy films and have your films developed. After that we can easily walk to SSultanahmet square and go on as long as you want. The other day a Bosphorous tour with a boat may be nice who didn't have a chance before.

But.... If you say, "we are not tourist, we want get some quality shots rather than everyone else" than another route to some different places like Balat can be planned. It is all up to you.

In order to get some impression for the places that I mentioned, you can use the links below:

Thanks smbilgin :)

My vote goes for Taksim and the places you list. Is there a cafe you can recommend we meet at on Saturday morning? Should we meet somewhere else on Sunday or the same?

Is Brussels far from you? As I said before, check www.flypgs.com for cheap flights. They always fly to/from cities with bigger Turkish communities. Brussels is the closest to you, I think.

Great, if you make it I'd love to talk to you about traveling central asia.

I can say Starbucks if you'd like to have a breakfast we can find another place.

There are almost 3 months. We can find the best place to meet. Don't worry.
