Ever a Nikon RF Digital Camera

Maybe its been asked.....but I have a hard time with the search function on rff.....after a couple years still dont know how to follow my own threads:bang:

But, I am really not complaining - I love this site.

I have a Millenium Nikkor 50/1.4 brand new and I will wait for a Nikon RF digital camera to use it if its anytime soon.....but am I nuts ? will we ever see this camera ? Cant epson just change the mount on the rd ?

As I understand it this is a very real scenario. A lot is dependent on how the new full frame sensor is received that is being used in the new "D3". I'm sure there are other RFF members that have more of an inside track than I, so maybe some of them could elaborate more on the subject.............. ;)
 
I would say that nikon will bring out sort of a "next generation" digital rangefinder. Think something like electronic framelines, a modular design and almost definitely autofocus. I would still buy it though. I doubt it will be out in the next 2 years.

I don't know if we'll ever see a Nikon RF, but I certainly dream of one :angel:

Until that dream eventuates it would be great if Tom A could make a batch of high quality Orion type adapters at an affordable price point ($500 or so), so we could use the Millenium Nikkor on an R-D1s or something similar. Fingers and toes crossed !!!!

And as to the question of a Digital Rangefinder I personally think the answer is both Yes and No. No - there will most certainly never be a "digital copy" of our beloved Nikon S2, S3, S32000, SP´s but YES there will most likely be some sort of "next generation" digital rangefinder..... it could be a development of the successful "point and shoot" range of cameras or perhaps even a development coming out of the new full frame sensor line.... Who knows !? As far as I see it there will be lot´s of different camera bodies and concepts coming due to the shorter life cykles and the new digital/software possibilities. The real question is -- will we be able to use the S-mount lenses ?? That I think is more unclear and that´s why a good adapter would be great!!

Rumors were,early next year, there will be two more Nikon cameras, A 21st Century RF camera in Leica mount(made by Cosina?) and a No-holds-barred Professional camera for $10k. Out Gunning anything Canon has....

I think you should sell the extra Millenium Nikkor to me! :D :angel:

Seems like Nikon is already outgunning Canon with the new D3 (some pixel-counters may not be satisfied yet, but you can't win them all..)

A digital Nikon RF? Could be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. In any case, I'd be very surprised if it comes with an M mount. Doesn't make any sense to me. Nikon have always been very proud of their lenses, and suddenly they would introduce a camera that will only use third party lenses? I don't think so.

Nikon have already demonstrated that they can produce modern high quality S mount lenses (35mm and 50mm). Add a few more to the lineup, and sell a bunch of new lenses as well.. Another solution would be a RF model using F mount lenses (?), or perhaps a new, modern S mount variant.

Only time will tell.

My guess is that future cameras will not use the reflex system anymoe.
The mirror was added because it was the only way to see through the lens, but now in the digital era, it is possible to transmit the image from the sensor to a viewfinder without the need of mirrors. The main disadvantage of mirrors are the dead space between lens and sensor, but this space it is not needed anymore!
I can imagine a future nikon camera (without mirrors) with a NEW mount and a new lens line. It will be a SL system (not a SLR) Better opticals will be possible, and you will be able to see through the lens anyway!

Before this is possible there are some issues to be solved:
1) time delay betwen digital finders and real thing.
2) quality of digital viewfinders
3) sensors that could see light out of the perpendicular axis.

In my opinion this will not happen before one year. Perhaps more

With no doubts, Nikon can produce modern high quality lenses - S mount, F mount or even a new mount variant. Anyway, in my opinion the point - marketing speaking - about a digital Nikon RF is that it should intrigue and catch the most wide RF's addicted and living arena; that would mean M mounts, or not?

a Nikon RF with M-mount might be very appealing for me :) I believe that Nikon S lenses are too few to be widely marketed as M-mount lenses do. Zeiss already switched to M mount. Cosina, Bessa follows Leica "standards" too :)

I'd consider Nikon unreasonable if they're going release a digital RF with S mount. It will become collectionable instead. Maybe same or less as Rd-1.
 
Cosina made similar cameras with both mounts, I don't think it would be very hard for Nikon to do it.

But it's a big stretch to think they're going to make a digital rangefinder anytime soon.
