Every-Day-Carry RF (again)

how about a contax(or kiev) with a 50/1.5 sonnar(jupiter)? and some light meter as the sekonic you talk about
they are supposed to be very precise in focusing wide open, ok, they are not in the weight/size league of the xa, not even the canonet, but they will perform well and resist harsh conditions.

Another option: a super ikonta or similar coupled rf in medium format, and pushing film even further. You can get away with much higher iso's in MF. And they ARE small
 
No advantages over the Canonet, at least not that I can see. But I wouldn't mind having one, anyway.

Not bad, but a little big.

I'm much more inclined toward 35mm for stuff like this. And I don't need to get away with the big pushes: I do 'em for fun!

there is a 40 dollar oly 35rc for sale here, now.

buy it & try it and sell it to me if you don't like it.
the lens is better, slower than the canonet, full manual with speed dial on top of the camera and a good enough meter for outdoors.
it's metal robust and a good looking little camera to boot!

Thanks for the pointer, Joe, but I'll pass. The Canonet is good enough if I decide to carry it, and a "good enough for outdoors" meter is no good for one who (nearly) disapproves of shooting outside.

That was a lot of goods.

If it's gotta be a RF I'd say Contax T
For Autofocus P&S I'd say Minolta TC-1 or Contax T2, T3 or one of the of Ricoh GR series.

I have a TC-1 and if I could afford it I'd get a Ricoh GR 21

I'd second the recommendation of the Leica CL. Hand in hand, it is substantially smaller and lighter than the M3, and paired with the 40 cron-C or rokkor (or VC 40), it is really compact. I can easily fit it in most of my coat pockets or cargo pant pockets. Granted, it doesn't fit in a pair of bluejean pockets ('are you carrying a Leica CL w/ lens in your pockets are just happy to see me?') ... but otherwise it is quite stealthy size wise. Shutter is just marginally louder than a M3, but definitely softer than any of the VC Bessas. And it obviously utilizes all your other leica lenses. good luck
 
Almost forgot, meter on the CL is quite accurate and will not let you down. Mine was modified by Sherry Krauter for newer 625 batteries. She might have some around that are for sale. Check her website.
 
A smallish, coat pocketable, 35mm RF with a 2.8 and a minimal shutter speed of 1/15th would include the Oly 35RC. Just throw away the battery, as you won't be needing it above ISO 800. It has hellish, narrow aperture ring flush with the body. Both your selected aperture and shutter speed are displayed in the viewfinder. It's a bit heavy for such a small camera. Maybe it will work, maybe not.

In low light, I'd put a working J-3 on an CLA'd Zorki 3M and call it a night.

Why not last generation LTM with vintage F2 50mm and/or modern f1.4 35/40mm? I've a 111b (NFS) which has a super rf. CV makes those beautiful viewfinders...

Boy, all these options. Naturally, the CL and Barnack options are very tempting, though somewhat pricey. Very cool, though. Most of the others fall down on one of the issues I mention at the top, or are too similar to the Canonet to bother.

No fully manual mode? It clearly isn't going to be of use in aperture priority mode. So I'd bag it, too! No wonder you feel frustrated!

Lots of nice choices available that others have mentioned.
