Expected price for G2 and 35/2 Planar?

Hello All!

I am thinking about moving from Leica M6 to a Contax G -set. I noticed the 35mm only fits for G2 or modified G1. Also read about the AF differences so I guess G2 would be nice...

But the price shouldn't be too high because I am changing mostly because of money.

So I am asking, what is the expected street price for this kind of set?

Oh, tank you! Forgot to check if there would be "this modern" camera on that list 🙂.

Does that G2 price look high though? Maybe the prices have dropped more after that list was created?

Ok, maybe just those couple sellers I found in Finland, were too cheap 😉.

Anyway after all I decided a green label G1 will do for now, as I get it with 28mm and 45mm by trading to my M6 and still get some money in between... Feels a good trade for me, even though I really loved using Leicas.

I think the G1 (instead of G2) is a mistake.

And if you learn how to use the search button in ebay (worldwide, German, British, Austrian, ...) you will know what is available where and at what price; and if you go to "advanced search" and look for prior sales you will know the recent price history, too ....

Of course you can also search the classified ads here or at photo.net, or search KEH, b+H, adorama and maybe that way you can narrow down your search and increase your buying savvy. Or even use google to hook you up with a "Contax G2".

Although the G2 is a more advanced design, the G1 is still a fully capable machine. I've had two and both worked wonderfully. Considering how well I like the G1, I'm curious how I'd like the bigger, heavier G2. Do I need 4fps? Not really although it might be handy for auto bracketing. 1/6000 shutter? Maybe, to shoot wide open in bright light.

Two things I like about the G2 vs G1:

1. The AF can be separated from the shutter (G2 has a separate button on the back)

2. The AF assist on the G1 is red LED. The G2 is infrared -- not visible, not distracting.

The G1 is definately more economical, smaller, lighter.

I just found a buyer for my G1 set (+ 45 Planar, 28 Biogon, Flash) for EUR 350,-
Cheap, but the set is used and I didn't pay a whole lot more for it either.

I'm keeping my other set though. I would be crazy to sell a gem like G1! That 45mm Planar is stuff of legends.

350 sounds fair. I am trading to the same set but no flash (I think) and I guess it will be about 400. Still ok as an easy trade I guess... It is a green label also, so I can think about getting the 35mm later.

What is green label exactly? I keep hearting about it but never bothered looking it up as the camera already does everything it’s supposed to. Something to do with IR?

Also, how do I tell I’ve got a “green label” or not? Both my cameras have green stickers with film-loading diagram inside the film can compartment. Is that the “green label”?

If I remember right, from reading something somewhere, the green label is a sticker inside the film chamber. And it means that the G1 was updated to use the entire line of contax g lenses (specifically the 35 and 21).

Yeah, the 21mm and the 35mm require this "modification" from a G1 body to work in it. Older G1's cant use those lenses.

Anyway about the original question, I tried to look from ebay (.de and .co.uk because I live in Europe, Finland) and ffordes and RFF but still it was a bit hard to find the price for this kind of combination.

Well, I will surely try to get along with this G1-set and see if I really feel I need the 35mm. That has been my favourite focal length anyway.

Everyone has their own choices and I am glad you are happy with yours. But I have owned and used both a G1 and a G2 for about seven years. I find I use the G1 about 95% of the time while the G2 sits in the bag. None of the extra features the G2 has are really useful to me but the lighter weight of the G1 is appreciated every time I use it.

I believe the G1 / G2 progression was driven by marketing factors. It is easy to sell a good camera and then convince users to buy a more expensive model as an "upgrade". But it is very difficult to sell the more expensive one first then convince people to also buy the less expensive one even if it is actually better.

Maybe I buy me a G1 to see if I like it. Nowadays they are really cheap.
