Can you use a developer after its expired? And how long? I bought it in summer. In september I mixed the powder with water. I divided it into 2 bottles. I started using one of them, and I sealed the other one after pushing out the air. I started using the second bottle in 18th of december. As I know, d76 lasts for 2 months when exposed to air. 2 months passed last week, and I have 1 roll waiting to get developed. This is my first pack of developer, so I dont know how long its still usable. I cant buy more until next month. Sorry if I wasnt clear enough.

IDK, I don't throw it out until it changes color. As long as it is still clear, I don't know that you need to worry. I dump mine when it turns a strong brownish color.

Take the cut leader from your film and drop it into a beaker with some of your D76. Develop it in the light for about 20% of your normal development time then fix it. Compare the piece with the fogged part at the start of a normally developed roll. If it is about the same density your developer is fine. If it's lighter you may need to add some time to make up for the lost activity. If it's clear dump the developer. This is sometimes called a clip test.

D76 should last up to 6 months in a full bottle, no?

:)

Ray - yup. 6 months in a full bottle. then 2 months after that in a bottle with any air in it.

For me, I've kept half-empty bottles of ID-11 well past 6 months without any discoloration or noticeable change in activity. Certainly no developer death.
