If you haven't earned the necessary talent by now, Grasshopper, you have to choose between two paths, carry the $$$$$ Canon gear like Sysiphus or buy a $200 digital point and shoot and use it until you can walk from space to space and face to face and see pictures as stories and stories as pictures.
Distance between people, aesthetic and otherwise, has to be closed in order to make good stories. It's not the instrument (which you mistake as media) that makes the picture. It's your love of people, your ability to communicate, engender trust, and act as sympathetic voice that is at the heart of photographic talent.
