Fascinating encounter

Classic and stunning work! I agree that the day of straight forward classic unmanipulated photography is coming to an end. Sad but we have many fine photographers to look back at and learn from their work and enjoy.

Zimbel! He got Winogrand into photography!!!

Oh yes, he was the one to show Winogrand the darkroom, which in turn made him fall for photography at once. But not just that, Zimbel and Winogrand formed the so called 'midnight to dawn club'. They were both up all night, working in the darkroom together.

This evocative look at New Orleans' French Quarter in its Post-World War II heyday captures a dark, feisty world of girlie shows, jazz, convivial coffees at the Café du Monde, as well as the loneliness of solitary figures at a bar. George Zimbel's career as an American photojournalist was thriving--he created the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt being raised around her by the air from a subway grate in New York, along with photos of the Kennedys--when he connected with New Orleans' night rhythms, and the resulting trove of images explores time, place and people vividly and compassionately.

Wow. My parents werent even born then, my grandparents were in diapers or the womb, and yet this is just ridiculous. That MM photo will never jump the shark, its too iconic. Ned this is probably one of the craziest/coolest stories I've ever heard

What a great encounter, Ned. Thanks for the thread.
I was stunned to see some of the timeless images taken by Mr. Zimbel.
They are awakening and inspiring indeed.
Time to take photography more seriously.

Hey, did anyone think of suggesting to Mr. Zimbel he join RFF? He can do-so through his site. Bet he'd be amused by this thread, and have some cool insights to share. The appropriate person would be NB23.

WOW! This guy is the real deal.

No doubt....this guy can deliver. I'll bet an hour or two just talking with this guy would have an impact your photography. Great story.

OK I have just read the exchange of correspondence with the NY Times schill. I take it all back Mr Zimbel. Any implication that you may be an alter cocker, (even though said in jest) I withdraw whole heartedly. You are not and never were. You sir are a mensch. Well done. You have my admiration.

Cool Ned! You can never tell who you will bump into in Montreal, eh? ;)

ps, they just don't make light like that anymore.

No more such light indeed!

BTW, I ran into Andy Summers just moments ago...

What a guy... You must contact him at once! If anything, so that he touches you and gives you his blessing.

Thanks for posting the link and the story! :)

Ah fiddlesticks, did you call the Police? Or did you hum "Don't Stand So Close to Me"?:D

The film for the Marilyn pictures wouldn't have had to be pushed. Remember that those were taken on a film set. There would have been a tremendous amount of light.

Right. He was using plain old Kodak Plus-X film.

Cheers!

Alter cocker is two words. I know because I'm one myself.
Kurt M.

It is two words. In German, and maybe in Yiddish also, they are alter Knacker, meaning old fogy. But alter Kacker is very different: old ****ter.

I'm definitely an alter Knacker. I won't admit to more than that.

Hey, thanks for the post! I have been needing some inspiration!

It is stories like this that make me want to immerse myself in photography full-time.

Again, thanks for this little gem of a story.

That's beautiful. On the rare occasions that people have commented on my Leica, I've always taken the time to talk to them, and in every case they've turned out to be fine people with great taste (naturally). But Zimbel, man that beats everything :)

My congratulations to NB23, indeed a fascinating encounter. Who said around that it is all about luck and timing?

Now the question left is what will NB23 do next ? Up to my knowledge, which is not all world embracing but still exists, very successfull photographers and very outstanding photographers (kindly distinguish among the two) passed most of their life crowded with photo youngers around trying to suck from them their secrets. Therefore this will be the main receipt for failure.

But NB23 can try to develop a friendship, a true one, out of respect towards Zimbel and towards himself (NB23), as a human too and if it becomes a sincere relation, at some point I have no doubt that Mr Zimbel will open himself towards NB23.

It is just that at that point, NB23 will find that the secret "techniques" are the smaller part of the story and the big one being the whole vision of photography and art of Mr Zimbel. NB23 prepare yourself for one of the biggest surprises of your Life, that may, or may not, shake you from top to bottom.

Funny, the whole process is somehow like making a great photo, out of a great opportunity.

Cheers,
Ruben
