New York February NYC Camera Convention/6th Annual Camera Beauty Contest

...

Here's a link to the subway map that is the reference of record:
http://web.mta.info/nyct/maps/subwaymap.pdf

On Manhattan, you can walk basically anywhere only a short distance from a subway stop.

The New Yorkers here will chime in with suggestions as well but I think your room you found is a winner.

Phil Forrest

Thanks a Ton Phil, I went ahead a requested the room, hopefully Ill see soon their exact availability.

A lot of great info to work off of, the subway map is indispensable.
Im super stoked!

The Q is a good train to get around from. If you switch to the N, which makes local stops, you can get off at Prince Street for Puck Fair. That is assuming it will still be open then.
Also remember that the subway map on paper is free at any ticket booth.

I'm a regular NYC visitor these days as my daughter lives there. I just got back about a month ago from NYC. I found the app "Embark NYC" to be extraordinarily useful. I was literally glued to this app the whole time I was there. Tells you how to get to and from locations via the subway and when the next trains are running. The app is free. In my case, I used it on my IPhone.

If your AirBnB doesn't work out for you, I can recommend an AirBnB place to stay. It's in Williamsburg in Brooklyn and I stayed there for a week when I was in NYC last month. The fellow that rents out the place is actually a photographer and a very nice guy. The accommodations were comfortable and very convenient to getting to the City.

Hope that helps,

Ellen

Williamsburg is a much better location than Parkside Ave. A lot of photo opportunities, tons of bars and restaurants, big night life, very convenient travel to Manhattan.

Ooh,

What's more manly than a 1936 Leica III with Olive Kidskin, a Uncoated Summar and a Lyre back VIOOH? That same camera with a N&N strap, that's what!

Those MP's might as well stand for... Masculinity Problems!

Is that trashy enough ;)

B-9,

LOL.

Size does not really matter, although I like big cameras, but I think big balls is what makes a good photographer.

I think you will like my IIIG with this crazy oversized Pentax-L "Special" 43/1.9 in LTM. The combination of 1.5 magnification on the VF'er and a hyper short 90 degree focus throw stop-to-stop makes for a killer street shooter.

Sometimes I just build cameras to annoy people. LOL.

Ellen,

It was really great getting to spend some time together, although our time was short. When the weather gets milder let's make the time to go walking around shooting.

B-9,

One of the great things about NYC is you don't really need a car, and mass transit infrastructure is kinda vast. Our subway and mass transit system is so big and interesting that it kinda has its own culture.

The number 6 train is one of the most overcrowded. A friend and I stood on a platform at 68th Street waiting for another train since the one at the platform was jammed full. Repeatedly the conductor tried to close the doors, and my friend Mike and I laughed really hard as the doors in front of us pinched the asses of two women repeatedly. Basically fat chubby butts blocked the door. LOL.

Cal, two requests. (1) Please remind me closer to this date to gather prizes and (2) we maybe should have a digital camera class this year...

John,

Will do.

I think having a digital camera class is as great idea. For this new catagory I have a really cool prize. I have a brand new Canson paper Trial pack that I got from the Canson booth at the PhotoPlusExpo. I also have some HP paper that is packaged for making photo greeting cards that includes envelopes.

I think everyone will be surprised about all the wear on my Monochrom.

I just hyjacked Brian, who is my friend who now owns the M3-DS that I bought, traded away, and recovered via a loan sharking deal with an art dealer. He should be coming to both the January Meet-Up and the Camera Convention.

The above mentioned 1954 M3-DS I got from my friend Angel at Adorama. It had its prism resilvered by Leica, had Leica factory service, and featured a brand new "L" seal. It is mucho clean.

Ok guys, update.

I've found both accommodations and flights for Feb. 7-11th
Ide be arriving around 7pm on the 7th and leaving around 9am on the 11th.

Giving me a few full days to explore. The 8-9th would be ideal.

I'll furnish prizes for 4 Contestants, so possibly 2 categories 1st and Second place, or 4 categories if we just want to name winners.

Here's what I'll bring,
2 Basic Straps (will include split rings)
2 One knot style straps (no split rings)

Both styles with White Cord.

I'm also going to load down and hopefully fit around 10 more random straps and some other accessories to swap with. Colors and style will vary. I'll also have a few biz card wallets to match.

I'll take reservations for a custom length/color, no fee, look before you donate.
Will barter for lunch/beer/film! It would be sweet if I could avoid flying with film.

Let me know how that sounds guys.

B-9,

I am a greedy ******* with a freezer full of Arista Premium (now discontinued) and Legacy Pro (Fuji Acros). Let me know how much film you need if this suits you. I'll PM you and give you my cell, but understand that I don't text. I value my film at $3.00 a roll (36 exposure). I think I have about 30 rolls of Arista Premium left. The only Tri-X I intend on shooting is in 120. Acros is my main film now.

As far as flying: for $5.00 you can get this monorail MTA ride from JFK to Jim-Ack-A Queens where you can get either the LIRR or the subway into Madhattan. It is a nice ride that I say is also a cool experience. You'll get a feel for the sprawl of the city.

What is very popular in NYC is a wrist strap. For me I like carrying my camera attached to my wrist where it is a weapon held in plain sight. Also I want to avoid getting choked by my own neck strap in case of a struggle. Kinda like wearing construction boots; wearing weapons that are always ready; and in plain sight. With a wrist strap my camera also is more ready to shoot since it is already in my hand.

I'll likely be a work perhaps 4 or 5 days over the next two weeks, and in January I'll be at home trying to assemble and intergrate Piezography with my Mac, 27 inch Eizo, and Epson 3880 until January 11th the date of the Meet-Up.

I'll for the most part be doing full immersion since I order mucho supplies to make several hundred prints. I spent mucho money because I bulked up on ink and paper.

BTW I never printed digitally ever before.

Please keep this thread going. If I don't respond to the trash talking its because of the above and not because of other reasons. LOL.

As one of the winners and runner-ups of the previous years, I was hoping the contest this time will be held on Feb 1, Feb 7 or Feb 8 as I will be traveling again in the second week of Feb. If not, I will have to miss the highly entertaining event the second year in a row.

And here comes a new and new old gear alert: Perfectly repainted (over brass) black M3 (Sr. # >1M); and black Leica M-P.

John

John,

It wouldn't be a good Camera Convention without you. It seems like you got your request granted: Let's have the Camera Convention on Sunday Febrary 8th.

Now we only need to firm up on the location. I hope that Puck Fair remains an option. I really like that we can isolate ourselves from the reast of the bar and that because there is only one way up and one way down that it offers a level of security.
