My wife is both a teacher and doctoral student, so the money saved was a treat.

Leica had an M9 education discount a few years ago. I wonder what they're doing with that now.

I will reappear someday.

"Maggie" is an academic and I'm going to try and get her "academic" discount, but at the same time I need to take advantage of the 18 month Zero APR offer from Apple.

Anyways this reminds me of day trading oil stocks in a margin account. It's kind of exciting, but timing is everything.

When are you coming to the meet-ups again to make fun of me? The Meet-Ups have evolved. All these people invading from New Jersey. Lots of new faces.

I'll post: I promise. I bought a bunch of SD-cards. Almost have a 8G filled. Have four 16G cards to fill which is very easy to do with the Monochrom. I love this camera, but I also seem so bonded to my film cameras, and I want to keep shooting as much film as possible.

Leica got rid of the educational discount right after I bought my M9 in the fall of 2010. Not sure why but it was the only way I had access to a camera as expensive as the M9. I used part of my GI Bill to cover it as I was allowed a one time big expenditure. I haven't heard anything about any type of discount for students coming down the way from Leica which is unfortunate but they'll do what they'll do.

Don't tell anyone, but Tung once smuggled his dog (Chowder) into a meet-up. Basically anything goes, and all are welcome.

BTW just be aware that the January Meet-Up had an element of a flash mob. The turnout happened to be large, and I wonder because this February event is the Fourth Annual Beauty Contest/Swap Meet/Gearfest that has the potential to be a massive crowd.

In past Meet-Ups we have had 7 M9's present and easily hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gear laying around on a table. It was obscene the amount of gear. I will be going to Puck Fair at 12 noon when they first open, even though the Meet-Up officially starts at 1:00 PM, to secure the balcony. Basically there is only one way up and one way down.

Last month at Harlem Public the owner wanted to know what was going on when our crowd kinda took over the place. Everyone please be careful with your gear. In over 4 years we never had anything bad happen. Anyways it wouldn't surprise me if 40-50 people show up at this event. Out of all Meet-Ups the February Meet-Ups are generally the biggest turn outs.

Why do smart women love slacker dudes like us? "Maggie" has a PhD and teaches at Fordham's Lincoln Center campus Grad school.

John knows me well. Sadly all I can do is chimp, but already the Monochrom has proven itself as a game changer, especially for a slacker like me.

For the past 5 years I annoyed "Maggie" and others by shooting mucho film without any regard to printing any work.

Anyways, soon that all will change. I promise.

The Monochrome definitely is a step towards medium format as far as resolution it seems, but the tonality just doesn't have infinite midrange of 120.

I have a 35/1.8 Nikkor in LTM. This is single coated glass that is low contrast. The midrange from this lens on an overcast or rainy day is amazing and is just like 120. I'm a lucky guy to own one of the 1500 ever made in LTM. What an amazing lens, but the modern Leica glass (28 Cron and 50 Lux ASPH) has better blacks and shadow detail that isn't so evident with the Nikkor.

I shot the 28 Cron and 35/1.8 at night at 2500 ISO and the rendering difference mentioned above becomes like me: exaggerated. The 28 Cron, an ASPH lens, shows amazing detail even wide open and hand held. The image is a pair of row houses on Lexington Avenue from a fourth floor vantage point. The Nikkor, even though its a 50's lens is sharp by even modern standards, the blacks are less defined and detailed, but there is additional information with the Nikkor that adds a dreamy softness that is very tactile and medium format like.

If the Monochrom could combine the rendering of the Nikkor and 28 Cron into one basically I think I would have medium format quality. BTW under diffused light like an overcast or rainy day the Nikkor produces negatives that have the tonality of 6x9 in 120. The Nikkor 35/1.8 is a lens to die for.

Anyways this is all based on chimping.

As far as printing goes Piezography offers eight blacks and a gloss overcoat that provides added shadow and highlight detail. A Quadtone RIP replaces the OEM printer driver and more fully exploits the printer's design potential, while eliminating the color cast that sometimes is a problem with the Epson driver.

Eventually I'll find out how close to medium format I can get. Fellow slacker Rob like me just bought a 3880 and already installed a Quadtone RIP. Read his funny post on the "B&W Printing Epson 3880" thread. The truth will be told by 17x22 inch prints. Also know that I will likely be printing on "Art Paper."

When I finally get my digital studio rigged out with Piezography, after I expend the OEM inkset, you should come over to make some prints from your MM.

Also know that even though I bought a Monochrom, I still intend on shooting as much film as possible. I will likely shoot more than ever. To me digital and film are separate mediums.

"Maggie" is a fashion maven. I use to be a feral dog with no sense of style, but after 15 years "Maggie" kinda cleaned me up.

Anyway's it ain't easy living with someone getting a PhD. I suggest making sure you get paid back for all that support. It's kinda like getting a get outa jail card that never expires.
