fed 3 film problem

So I recently purchased a red fed 3 on ebay. The camera appears to work okay but when I rewind the film it rips. I assumed that I had messed something up when loading it. So I got my boyfriend to load the second roll of film into it. Either we both loaded the film wrong or there's something wrong with the camera.

What happens is I rewind until suddenly there's tension so I used a tiny amount of force and it begins turing again. When I take it out the film is ripped and I've lost the first 2-4 pictures. Part of the film is still wrapped around the film take up reel. I'm wondering if the film is getting caught on something.

Has anyone had a similar problem?
Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem?

I noticed that on some take up spools, the standard metal type, the film is trapped by a sprocket hole on a "tooth" on the bobbin. Rewinding past this point will rip the film off the spool or tear as you have found. The way forward may be to rewind to the point where it stops and the remove the film cartridge and spool to release the rest. There should be no problem with this as this is the way that it was loaded. I guess that the skill is in stopping at the right point.
As a note, I have found odd bits of film inside some FEDs, once lodged in the curtain track, causing shutter problems. I think that they got there when the film was rewound off the bobbin, tearing small pieces off.

Sorry if you already done this but did you make sure the rewind collar around the shutter release was pressed down and turned to 'C'? This releases the sproket and allows it to turn. I once ripped little bits off my negs because I didn't release the sproket 🙂 The film shouldn't be feeling tight when rewinding.
