Philippines Filipino RF users!!!

@ Ed: Congrats Ed on your new R-D1s!

@ Pinoy RFers: Sayang at di ako makapunta. Sana kapag makauwi ako next time, mag-exhibit ulit ha para naman I can join too (parang kawawang bata). :(

For the meantime, practice na lang muna ako in making enlargements...:p

I'll be there in spirit na lang... And, tama, kailangan dumami ang Pinoy RFer's...

thanks annie.

and, annie, i don't think you need to be physically present to have your photos included in the exhibit. with internet and/or an efficient "padala", everything is possible. i will bring this up in the meeting/xmas party, if you don't mind. you can be there too -- via webcam. pwede ba yun, jay?

Lahat defective. Three complete, one missing the pressure plate and plate springs. All look to be repairable. All need new shutter curtains (easy to do :p ).
No lenses. For some reason, the rf and vf optics of these cameras, despite their condition (they all look shabby, as if they've been stored at the back of some forgotten closet), are very clean. The rf windows of these cameras look contrasty and the golden secondary image is well defined. Much unlike the RFs found here, clean bodies but foggy windows and hardly visible rf images.

Must fix them (said in a zombie-like manner :D)

i have to see you work on one, jay.

ed, i and ditoy share the same profession. while he does films, i do radio and tv commercials. i still collect LP's though i am not an audiophile. baka may MILES DAVIS=BITCHES BREW and BOB MARLEY=CATCH A FIRE (Zippo jacket) ka dyan that you would want to dispose off...akina! :p i need to get my amp working too!!!! i am also a session musician (percussion player).

shall we ask what each one does aside from photography, or sa party nalang? :D
sorry, wam, i only have the bitches brew and marley's catch a fire on cd. uhh ... not for sale. nice to know we share other interests. i listen to all types of music from tribal, medieval to avant garde, to gothic rock. (heavy metal, kung masama ang loob). basta maganda ang arrangement and/or recording. i listen to 78s too -- the old shellac discs.

Hi everyone, my name's Nick. Just joined this forum and discovered this thread. I live in Q. C. and work in Makati. Got interested in RF when I saw an article on a website while I was searching for something that had to do with my LC-A camera. Anyway, the RF concept appealed to me. After a couple of days of research, I decided to bid on a Canon QL 17 GIII on ebay. I won it this morning. Eagerly anticipating now.

Any shooting or other tips a starter like me can get from you RF pros here?

Thanks. :)

hey nick,

welcome to the 'club'...hehehe. can you send the ebay link on which you won the cam? sama ka na rin sa party on the 29th. :)

welcome to the group nick,
i considered getting one of those lomo cameras. they give interesting colors and images. and i am also waiting for my canon ql17 g3 which i won in ebay (through my sister in SFO). they usually need new light seals though. so i asked my sister to buy seals for me at $6 a set.

wam,
yup the 78s are quite brittle. but they are still quite listenable. and are not harsh sounding like the early CDs.

wam, the seller's ebay link: http://myworld.ebay.com/dog2golf/
I was reading this thread and saw the discussion on the apparent lack of BW films in the country. I tried calling and going to some photo shops in Makati and wasn't able to find any. So I got 10 135 rolls and 10 120 rolls of lucky BW film from this guy: http://myworld.ebay.com/isaac.chen Including shipping costs, price per roll would be P115.

eddie, my relationship with my lomo cam is pretty much a love-hate one. I'm still getting used to zone focusing. Love it when I get it right and really hate it when I don't. One of the reasons I want to try RF is that I can do precise focusing.

Wam & Eddie

78 shellacs? Naku, mag-eenjoy kayo dito sa studio. I have about 200 78s here. The oldest I've got are some single-sided Enrico Caruso Red Label Victrola (very pristine) 12" discs dating from before the 1920s. Also got 4 acoustic phonographs- no amps or electronics, 2 wind up and 2 motor; a 78 rpm only Wilcox Recordette with tube amps, and 1960s portable phono (parang yung nakikita sa mga 1960s teen beach movies, kulang na lang si Annette Funicello :D). I prefer the suitcase phonographs over the large-horned gramophones.

Nothing beats listening to the old records in wind-up acoustic phonographs, though each time they are played, one step closer sila to oblivion. Kinakain kasi ng steel needle ang grooves. Nakakuha rin ako ng steel needles- play once and discard- for the phonographs. Ibang trip talaga.

Welcome Nick.

Forget about the LCA's. They're now shallow fashion accessories- and temperamental, overpriced, and too finicky. A compact RF or scale focused 35 can do better. If you want that toy camera look, there are many less expensive but equally able alternatives.

Eddie:
What light seals do you need? I've got a few here, some from Jon Goodman.

HUWAAAWWWW!!!! jay, vintage cars meron ka? hehehehe. :p

yup, the 78's are very fragile especially at this age. pang display and yabang nalang.

i remember a few years ago, a friend of mine who owns his web design company brought his turntable to the office. his employees are all young and 'techie' (tama ba spelling?). they were looking at the turntable like they were in a museum; big eyed, hands behind their backs and upper body leaning forward. hahahaha...jurassic turntables! :D

Hi, nick, congratulations on the new canonet. I got mine from ebay, too, but it was an impulse buy and I did not determine the condition of the camera (description was vague), I got burned, as the camera had missing parts (battery test buttons and VF window frame) and needed major work (stuck shutter, broken advance lever whatever). After an overhaul, I tested it (parts still missing), I do like it at first impression, but off it went back to repair because its meter was off. Prices look good on ebay these days...maybe I'll take a chance at another canonet.

Wam, got the canon for $ 135 -- includes a vivitar flash, lens hood and bag

Kat, the seller's rating was high and I took that for what it was. Hopefully, the camera isn't a lemon. If it is, I suppose I could always visit Hidalgo?

Jay, my venture into lomos was sort of an escape to the other end of the photography spectrum. Got fed up with high-tech, puro digital na lang these days, so I decided to go back to film and went with what was temperemental and finicky, albeit overpriced. :)

Same thing with music, I went back to vinyl. You should see the perplexed look of our houseguests whenever I bring out the turntable and play LPs. They'd ask "why?" and I'd try to explain. They're smiling and nodding as if they understand but I know they just don't get it. :D

Vintage cars wala. Used to have vintage 'matchboxes'...do they count?

I still like playing the 78s, putting them out every now and then. Once whilst shooting Rachel Lobangco, I took out the valve/tube amplified turntable and played a 78 rpm "Sh-bom". You should have seen her expression when she heard it...years and years ago, she debuted in a beer commercial whose theme was based on this old ditty.

Once I had a group of junior college students around for some picture editing. I put on an old (if you consider anything from the 1980s old! :D) LP and they started asking things like, "How do you change tracks...which button do you press?". They were so amazed that this action could be done by simply lifting the tonearm and moving it to the desired track. I don't think they were able to understand fully why LP's had a side B....afterall they were born in 1985-86 :D I wonder if this will be the case a few years from now with film cameras....:p

Nick

Seems a bit pricey though. I don't think you'd find anything as good in Hidalgo. Either you find junk or it will be expensive or both :D.

A good way to go anti-tech is to use the older, fully mechanical cameras.

Is there a trend or connection between old cameras, analog photography and analog music? Eh, anyone there who likes to write with fountain pens and dip pens? Annie gifted me the latter last year. I like using it. :D

WOW! it looks like it is not just rf photography we will be talking about. i use the garard 301 and shure 78. my 78s filipiniana from 1910 up must be treated with care. they are very rare. but those wind-up 78 turntables are great conversation pieces and quite expensive too. AND THEY EAT UP THE SHELLAC! the 78s do give a nasal sound but one still gets a lot of listenable music from them. anyone with bootleg elvis in 78? pressed in RP and considered pirated copies. they sell for US$100 @.
nick,
whoa! i keep a vacuum record cleaner that cost me only US$64. i built it around the vpi record cleaning suction tube.
kat,
now i fret waiting for the canonet. my sister says it looks old. (duh). but she says it "looks" functional. she arrives on the 18th with the canonet.
jay,
i might take you up on your offers -- your concoction for developing and the light seals. but my sister already bought the interslice light seals (aka goodman seals). but i still have to find a good reel for my developing tank. maybe, you have a spare lying around? i know there are some in hidalgo. i still have to find time and enough courage to go there at this time.

Yay! Now we've got two things to talk about. My oldest filipiniana recording is from the late 1920s (green Columbia label, USA pressing, marked "electric recording so its definitely 1925 or later). Still very playable and clean sounding.

I have a semi-dismantled Garard auto changer. Needs to have cartridge installed and wired.

At present, got only three working reels. Plastic Paterson type reels are still available from Rational. I could give you the contact number if you want.

Jon sent me an envelop full of assorted seals, foams and stickers for free years ago. Haven't had any use for much of them since The Soviet RFs don't really use them and they seem to like ordinary yarn or plush black velvet better. :D

wam, you should hear marlene dietrich on 78. and you will never wonder why she is a bisexual. she can get you swooning whatever gender you have. she doubles her chances of getting in bed with someone because of her voice. :D 78 captures voice in a very warm manner. slightly nasal though.
and there are turntables that are still being produced. Club DJs use the turntable for mixing and scratching. and there are actually more turntable brands now than ever. for the DJs and the audiophile. LPs are still being made costing from $15 to $30 a piece. and, i suspect this is the way film photography will go too -- high-end film cameras and expensive films. :bang:
