i am getting one too from my sister, also from california. on the 18th! mabuti na lang ibang date. for a while there i thought we share the same sister. and i am hoping it won't need any tweaking.

congrats. the wait is finally over. and well worth it, right? i am having fun with mine every day. i bring it with me everywhere i go. its performance even in low light is way beyond what i was expecting from deegeetahl. 1.5 crop is the only major downside i have encountered so far; ditoy says i should go for the 12 mm cv. the option of taking photos on raw and jpeg simultaneously is a big boon. i get to store and work on the raw file later ... even in retirement ... and enjoy the photo now on jpeg.
and ... err ... can i also bring my canonet to the party for a check up? i hope i get to remove its old light seals and replace with new ones before then. i plan to shoot some pictures first and have you guys evaluate, if it is okay.
and do i bring some 78s?
how about the food? i must have missed the post on this one. potluck, right? suggested food items? or is it just spirits and pulutan? wam's suggestion of bringing paracetamol hints of an intoxicating evening. 😀

welcome to the group, xta. i just had my canon 7s repaired for Php1500 in hidalgo through a friend who had time to go there. but i am not happy with the result. so sorry, i can't endorse any at the moment. what rf camera is this?
 
Mike Santos of Picture City has cleaned and done basic repair of common issues on my RFs.

Apparently, sisters are wonderful intermediaries for ebay camera purchases, as I also send my purchases to mine in CA and she sends them over in balikbayan boxes. The main disadvantage is, by the time the item gets to you and may have problems or not be as described by a less honest seller, it's too late and too much trouble to return or complain to ebay.

what you could also do, like jay, is to buy multiple items from one seller and have shipped one time only...whether to a relative abroad or here in the philippines. this lessens your shipping charges.😉

Regarding cameras from eBay, I deal with sellers who will pack several cameras in one shipment. Just recently, I got one package with 4 broken FED-1 (of no value to anyone except me🙂 Then another FED-1 came in, with a nice and clean FED-2 which was ordered for a friend.

You are so right. The R-D1s is pure heaven! It's everything I want in a digicam. No "useless" and cluttering controls whatsoever. Just a plain passive machine which allows maximum control and creativity.

Yes bring your 78s. Food too, unless we can munch on them after playing them 😀

Couldn't get out to shoot (meron bang gusto gumala this Sunday?) anything much. So I did mostly portraits and then some. One was shot in the studio using full strobe lighting. All with Russian Industar and Jupiter lenses.

Hi XTA

As a rule, it would not be a good idea to send any camera to Hidalgo. If the camera is fairly recent, inexpensive and does not have much electronics in them, it may be OK to send it in one of the shops there. There is one technician there, Cesar, who does good work. This case is an exception, rather than the norm.

Typical Hidalgo repair often means a quick WD-40 squirt, cannibalised parts, or inept servicing. I once saw a badly mutilated Leica II which the 'experts' in that shop could not put together.

A student of mine once sent her otherwise minty Yashica Electro to one of the shops there. I am sure that it was in working condition since it only lacked the "Yashica" battery. It's no longer available but one can be jerry-rigged from still available alkaline button cells.

A really stooooppppiiiiddd (pardon my english) technician snipped a couple of wires and removed some electronic components from the camera. After which, it ran only in one speed. And that cretin of a repairist even claimed that it was better! I guess someone did the same to his brain earlier in his lifetime 😀.

that jupiter 3 of yours looks quite sharp. nice bokeh too.
and my industar 61 is the 2.8/53. a nice performer. but now i lust for the LD.
uh... 78 shellacs with the lint residue of time is hardly edible. bleh. 😛

Really lucky to get a couple of well-collimated J-3's. 😀 Your I-61 is probably the same as the LD version. The difference is really hard to see what the plainly marked I-61 do from those marked "LD", if there are indeed any. And the Health Secretary has determined that shellac may be bad for the health 😀

For the Yashica Electro (a special 5,6V mercury cell was made for it, about the size of an AA cell), you can make one. You'll need 4 "LR-44" or "A76" cells (or 1 "4LR44), some tinfoil and a bit of cardboard. Make a tube sized to fit the battery chamber.

Stuff the cells inside the tube. If you use 4 cells, tape them together before shoving it in. The negative (-) side should be close to one end of the tube.

Fill the remaining space in the tube with crumpled foil. What you want to do here is to make a stuffing which is electrically conductive so that the positive (+) battery terminal would be connected to the camera's + contact when the battery is installed.

It will help if you have an actual sample of the original battery for modelling your DIY battery.

Place the new battery in the camera, making sure that the polarity is correct. Cap the battery chamber, and do a battery check. Your camera should power corrrectly.

For the Minolta, I'm not sure what sort of battery it used.

i found some sites that says that LR-44 can be used for minolta...but SR-44 is better daw coz it's silver oxide, not alkaline..so does that mean, i can use SR-44 for yashica too..?

you have two J3's that are well-collimated?! ang suwerte mo naman!!! one is very hard to come by. and you have two! #$@! please let me know if you unloading one.

and about sunday ... you are not thinking of the expected mammoth rally in luneta huh? that will be an interesting chopsuey of political and religious persuasions.

@ Jay: Woohooo! Congrats on the RD-1s! I liked the muted colors from the J-3 and Industar LD/1. Which vintage of the J-9 will work with the RD-1s? (as if meron akong RD-1s...) . The B/W tones don't do much for me though. Maybe it's just me. Have you tried shooting in B/W with B/W filters? How about your uncoated lenses? Sorry for the many questions...😀 Now you have the opportunity to compare how vintage RF lenses perform in digital and film. Great! 🙂

@ Eddie: I laughed when I read your post about you and Wam sharing the same sister. LOL! Ibang "Six Degrees..." na yan...hehehe.

xta, I'm not sure the minolta has electronics capable of fixing the voltage difference between the 1.5v LR44 and/or SR44 and the 1.35v original mercury battery. I use 1.4v zinc oxide hearing aid batteries for my RFs. Congratulations on the two cameras, I'm still hoping for a Minolta 7SII some day. My Vivitar ES and Konica S3, tho supposedly "clones", don't have manual override.

I could be mistaken, but I think the regular alkaline PX28 batteries can also be used with the Yashica.

the battery for these cameras are only for the meter, right? for cams with manual override, i believe you could still use without the batteries...what about the ones without manual override, like the yashica 35 series? i know they're aperture priority. can you still use them without batteries?
 
Doesn't the Yashica default to 1 speed without a batt? I'm not sure if it's 1/500 or 1/30--my memory fails me...

Retro, what's the plan on the 29th? I'm afraid I'm a corporate slave...work on that day.
 
Wam and Eddie, what kind of batteries do your canonets use? I recall that in their original states, they still use mercury batteries. Are yours modified already? The reason I'm asking is that . . .

If it still runs on mercury batteries, kaya bang imodify sa camera shop?
