Film MP seeks 50mm

I love my 50 summicron ( I think it's v4, no built in hood.)Everything about it seems perfect to me, I love the focus tab, I love the bokeh, I love the way the aperture ring moves. For me F 2 is perfect, it's a little slower, but I find I get more perfectly focused shots at 2 then at F 1.4. It's a canada model with no optical difference but cost me less money. Money I then spent on film, a scanner, some Adox paper, a fair amount of drugs and bourbon. All of which make me want to shoot more pictures.
 
If you want to buy a lens at such a cost level, by all means go ahead and do it.
I have been very happy with the Rigid Summicron as my favorite 50mm lens, in addition to the CZJ 5cm 1.5 LTM. Both are old lenses, and both lenses are superb.

I use the pre-asph 35mm in addition to the V1 Summicron 35. Both are great lenses, and each has a different look to its imames.

In the end, it depends on what you really are after when you want to buy a 50mm lens. If it is about photography and about the practical aspects of choosing one specific 50mm lens, then I sugegst that you get a lens as a loaner first before spending $7500.
 
Each of these lenses will have its own unique look and way of rendering scenes. It would probably be best to test drive each them to determine which is more pleasing to you.

For my money, I much prefer the summicrons -- the summiluxs are just way too harsh/clinical for my tastes. YMMV

As I've started this thread, I figured I might add my first thoughts, as I finally bought the 50mm summilux asph.

I'll try to make this short, it ended up being the perfect choice for me, the size is perfect, the quality is much beyond my own eyes and the rendering is fantastic. While I think that this is the lens for ME, it may not be the one for you, we're all different. Yet, I am impressed and sincerely think that, thanks to your help, I've done the right choice for ME. While I was comparing 3 amazing lenses (which leica lens isn't anyway) this one is the right one for me, and I'm delighted about that. I'm certain this will be my most used lens in the long run; time will tell, but enough said, let's release some shutters; that's what this is about, not comparing technologies, but taking great pictures.
 
Good call. There's essentially nothing that lens can't do, and it will hold its value if you should decide to go another route.
 
I've said it once and I'll say it again - I think the ZM range of lenses have too much inherent contrast and are too sharp.

I had a ZM Biogon and had to be very careful on a sunny day with exposure and developing afterwards. Also, my Biogon fell apart with loose fittings.

So, having said that, I think a pre-Asph is the way to go or a 1980's version 50mm Summicron (without the built in hood). The money saved on the aspherical could be used for bucketloads of film.
 
Big congrats. It's an amazing lens and I agree with everything you write below. I also have the pre-asph but will use the asph almost always. It's my most used lens and I find it very versatile.

I find pretty much no good reason to pursue any ASPH lens - as the increases in sharpness/acutance are not worth the trade-offs in what ASPH designs do to overall feel, healthy spherical aberration, and the balanced/tame contrast of non-ASPH designs. Also, they're relatively too expensive.

Most decent lenses since the 60s are sharp enough.
