Hi,

I am wondering if the hood that came with the Nikon S3 reissue and it's 5cm f/1.4 lens are compatible with the original 5cm f/1.4 lens. I think the filter size is the same, 43mm, but I also read somewhere there was a difference in pitch.

Thanks for your help.

I believe there is a difference in filter thread pitch w/the older 1 being coarser. In my experience, new 43mm accessories will fit the old lenses, but the vintage filters & screw-in hoods (from Walz, etc.) doesn't always fit on the new glass. There is enough sample variation in the old accessories that many of them will work on the 2000 version. Might take some trial & error. In your case, the hood that came w/the reissue is a snap-on & should work fine on new or old lenses.

Hi Jan, with the clip-on hood you don't really need to worry about the pitch, but FYI the vintage Nikkor 5cm f1.4 has a thread pitch of 0.5mm and the Millennium Nikkor 50mm f1.4 has a thread pitch of 0.75mm. See the thread linked below for info on other Nikon RF lenses.

Thanks Furcafe and Jon.

I now have a second question: I understand that the 5cm f/1.4 reissue is based on the design of the 1964 "Olympic" lens. As the optical formula and size of the "Olympic" and reissue are different from the original 5cm f/1.4, would there then be a difference between the hoods? Would the new hood of the 5cm reissue be longer or have a different shape?

The hood for the original 5cm f1.4 is pretty much identical in size and shape as the hood that came with Millennium 50/1.4. I've compared the two side by side and couldn't see any difference except the paint finish and the font of the white characters on the hood.
