Filters and exposure adjustment

Folks,
Sorry for the newbie question, but in practice how do you folks deal with adjusting your exposure for a filters? For example a yellow filter requires 1 stop. With an on camera meter like a Bessa R, do you meter with your lens one stop up from where you want to be, meter, adjust your shutter speed, then stop down? What works best in practice? Rating your 400 film at 320? How does it work for AE cameras like a Bessa R2A?

Through the lens metering requires no adjustment on your part.
The light reaching the meter is reduced by the filter.

Somehow I thought the bessas didn't meting through the lens. Good to know thanks.

Like Mango said, some B&W films may need a bit more exposure with orange and red etc. I think there's something about it on the Ilford website for each film.

Bessa's have a meter cell pointing at the shutter curtain as do M6's. So that's TTL metering. Manny has nailed this, deep orange and red filters need adjustment because meters are tailored to panchromatic film. Sensitivity falls off at the red end of the spectrum, this is why we use "sky" filters in the first place. A little overexposure never hurts print film.
