Filters And Shades - How To Simplify?

It seems that filters and shades for the Canon RF lenses are difficult to find, not cheap when you do, and don't tend to work on more than one lens since they have such different filter sizes.

Perhaps as a result, I have no shades or filters for my Canon P lenses.

Suppose I "standardized" on a smaller but still-common modern filter size, say 48mm or 52mm, and got the appropriate step-up ring for each lens. Then I could get just one set of 52mm filters and a couple of shades.

Other than looking ungainly, would this work?

john, not true.
i have a canon shade for 4 of the 5 canon lenses i have, and a very nice non canon shade for the fifth.
i use both series filters and sized filters. almost all from ebay or members here.
i have paid as litlle as 4 bucks for a canon shade in very nice shape.
it takes a bit of time and daily visits to ebay, photo.net, various websites and don't be shy about asking the good folks here what they have in their junk boxes.

John your solution would certainly "work". The only issue might be that a step-up ring and shade might obstruct the finder. Also if you buy a step-up ring for each lens it might equal or exceed the cost of Joe's solution.

If you are patient and check frequently on eBay, you can get good quality filters at excellent prices. It just takes a while... 🙁

When digging around on ebay, look for Walz filters and hoods-they made accessories for specific brands. Some people misspell the name as Waltz. That's always worth a search. Also search on '40mm'-it's surprising what turns up. Years ago, before ebay, I looked for stepping rings for 40mm and found nothing.
