Yes, my brand new Leica M has finally arrived albeit 33 years late. Flashback to Jan 1974 and with my brother off to Hongkong for a holiday, I asked him to buy me a new camera duty free, a Leica no less because I'd recently spoken to a wedding photog. and he'd said "I've used a Leica for 30 years and it's never let me down". So cashed up with my $120 Ted went to HK and came home with a brand new Yashica TL Electro Slr. Of course being young and stupid, I didn't know any better. And after all I had my first real camera. That served me well for 11 years until it died. Enter camera no 2 a Nikon FA. This formed the heart of my photography for 18 years until on a whim, in 2003 I bought a Hexar RF. This was my intro. to the joys of rangefinder photography. However throughout all these years the idea that a Leica M represented the best in 35 mm photo. never went away. And the times I'd spied the thing in shops with it's understated elegance, something that oozed class but at the same time appeared above all to be a functional photographic tool, only increased my belief that a Leica was the Holy Grail. Fast forward to Nov. last year when out for our evening walk with my wife and 14 year daughter, for no apparent reason I collapsed and was rushed to hospital. Incarcerated and feeling sorry for myself for 4 days whilst tests were done trying to find out what had happened, I made myself 2 promises: 1. to learn first aid 2. to buy myself that long desired Leica M. Well today it arrived, 33 years late but I expect, like that wedding photog. all those years ago, I'll be singing it's praises 30 years from now.

Congratulations to your new camera ! It took me maybe "just" ten years or so to get me a Leica (used ....🙄) but since the three days or so I have it, I shot roughly 10 rolls of film or so and didn't touch my Epson R-1Ds at all ...

Cheers,

Gabor

film-like ....

film-like ....

... this is not easy to judge since I also own a Nikon D1x which delievers very film-like results. To my eyes the R-1Ds delivers similar results as the D1x (in terms of film-like) but the photos are visible sharper and have better contrast. (This is of course my personal impression) Regarding BW conversion, the R-1Ds delievers the best tonality of all digital-cameras I have used (D70, D1x and some P&S). As I remember, the R-1Ds has the same Sony sensor as the D70 but the results are more pleasing at least to my eyes. Also photos taken at high iso values (800 and 1600 ISO equivalent) are better compared to the D1x (which uses an older and different sensor) and the D70.

I am happy with my R-D1s in terms of film-like results and also handling, which is "M6"-like. I own the R-D1s only since end of last December but haven't touched the D1x anymore. (which I am going to sell due to it's weight and the kind of photos I like to take)

Best wishes,

Gabor

PS: photos I have taken with D1x and R-D1s can be found in my galleries:

Congra to you for your leica and your health!!!😛

There would be journey for you to explore leica photography. Take a decent leica lens...don't waste time on VC...they are good too but ultimately you will settle with leica counterparts:bang:...so why waste time on VC unless for those lenses that Leica don't have comparable, like 12mm or 15mm. Try one of your favourite focal lengths first and start taking pictures and enjoy.😉

Cheers.

Yes congratulations Alan. It took me 30 years too, why I don't know. I still have copies of Leica Fotografie from the late 60's - early 70's. Enjoy your M! 🙂

Well .... I agree somehow but on the other hand there is some decent but not that expensive glass from Zeiss and the (CV) Nokton 50mm f/1.5 is not that bad, too ...

Alan: What a wonderful story! It's always amazing how an event like that snaps one into focus. And while it would seem "too bad" the 33 years passed, now the M is that much sweeter, that much more special.

Enjoy, pay no attention to the men/women behind the curtain ("Get this lens!", "Only get these!", "Avoid this!") and post some shots when ya got 'em.

This story touched me very deeply. I am still a student with a part time job, but I decided that I didn't want to waste anymore time and bought an M. I did began with an EOS 5 8 years ago because it cost 1/10 of the leica counterpart at the time, yet dreamed about it when my friend at the photo club of the school said he was buying a 1200 euros M3, I didn't understood why putting so much money in an old camera at the time, I do now...

Enjoy Alan!

When I was growing up my father often talked about how he had always wanted to own a Leica M ("settled" for a Zeiss Contaflex B) --- he didn't make it through his sudden event a couple of years ago, so when my opportunity came to buy an M3 I went for it -- I can't pick it up without thinking about him.

Which one did you get?

JT

Thanks for the replies guys. I eventually settled on the M6 ttl for several reasons. The first was obvoiusly the cost viz a viz a MP. The second was for all those years I lusted after a Leica the M6 was the camera to get. I passed on the M7 because it has many of the features already on my Hexar RF. As far as lenses go I already have 5 in M mount, the 28 50 and 90 M Hexanons and the Cv 21 and 35 Ultron. Honestly it would be hard for me to believe that mankind can make lenses that are considerably better than the Hex lenses but I'm sure others will concur on this. Maybe down the track a second 35mm lens might be a possibility. Just for now though I want to luxuriate in the joy of having the M6at long last.

Are you enjoying it so far?!?!?! And how is the health?

It didn't take me 33 years, but it did take me about 5 before I got mine this past summer. I finally said the hell with it. I want it. I am not going to be happy till I have it. So here we are! 😛

m's

m's

i really couldn't say any more than what's already been said. about the m's AND the d1x... man i love both. the m6 just has burning through more film than i can get into the soup! and in the other corner is the d1x... it just has such a quality too it's images i can't quite put a finger on. i love it! i'm pretty content to keep the m6 loaded with b+w and the d1x for the colour work. they are both built like tanks and neither have ever failed me. ever. shooting raw and using software from bibble the d1x can produce 10 megapixel files with VERTICAL interpolation ONLY (when converting form nef or nikon's raw).

Hey Wayne, another Hex-addict!!! Alan, if you search you will find some interesting threads on M-Hexanons. Wayne (Venchka) uses his on an M5, and he has me salivating over that kit.
