This new body just sounds more and more like a perfect addition to any Fuji owners arsenal and a good starter everyone else.

To me, Fujifilm took out everything that made its cameras special in order to deliver a cheaper camera and was left with this camera. 😉
Except for the special sensor, and except they added a better LCD. Not to mention adding a hinge. 🙂 Not to mention the size, which is the same as the X20. And it's convenient for existing owners wanting another body...using the same battery as the other interchangeable lens models.

Couldnt agree more. All the X mojo is gone. All that is left is an entry level generic aps-c interchangeable lens mirror less camera. perhaps good enough for some but for most of us its pretty dull stuff

as superb as the lenses are, i am afraid thats not enough. there is a design intent and philosophy in the rest of the x body line that the xm simply doesn't have.

The intent of the xm1 was an entry level camera at a price point to attract others over that could care less about the back to basics of the xp1. Those who grew up w/ dslrs or p&s, I would suspect is what the product managers were aiming at. For those wanting to have more control, the xe1 and xp1 is where these models are aimed at.. To me very well defined product line. For those wanting an xe1 and control ui, at a lower price, this ain't it and I don't believe they ever intended it to be. They put their new consumer grade kit lens on it not the more expensive 18-55..
Look how well a LCD only camera like the Coolpix a or Ricoh grd is selling. Their control UI is not much different then what the xm is. Granted the two cameras are now the most pocketable apsc cameras out there and that is most likely the reason they are selling so well. But my point is their control interface is really not much different...
I suspect the xe1 is going to get cheaper as time goes on.

I can see many good reasons why they are offering this camera, and no downsides. But if it isn't for you, there are several others.

Agreed. My response was to Back Alleys assertion that the xm has the x "mojo" because it uses x lenses. I think the camera makes a lot of sense from fuji's point of view.

Consider the price point. It fills in a gap where Fuji was lacking as far as competing with the Nikon and Sony offering EVIL cameras. And for someone looking at those, the X-M1 fits the bill and is in the price range.
I am a different customer then those are. I own tons of film cameras. Love rangefinder and SLR and PnS and other cameras. Have a few digital, but no digitals I really love.
But, I also don't have the budget to plunk down $1300+ at this juncture. So this camera gives me hope. Maybe I don't get one, I end up deciding to save up my hard earned cash and get a X100s or X-Pro1 or similar. Maybe I get the X-M1 because it's affordable, then decide later it's not enough and go upwards.
Either way, it filled that gap and created a customer out of someone like me. As well as those who are in a store looking at the Nikon and Sony and then see the Fuji and have options to pick.
Maybe it has less "mojo" because some of the stuff that power users want is lacking or the hard knobs aren't there. Some people don't want all that, they just want to aim and press the button.
Me, I want all the power all the knobs and the OVF if possible but like I said, this one is in my budget more. And it gives me a comparison jump off point even if I end up going higher and saving up for it.
Plus I am curious how it is going to do and perform since it has a nice sensor and is the baby in a group of very beloved Fuji X cameras.
