Hi all!

The Lubitel is actually a TLR but it's FSU and I just wanted to share some recent pics.

I got the Lubitel 2 two years ago on a flee market for 8$ or so and haven't give it a try until now. It's my only TLR so I was a newbie to TLR's too :D
My first impressions were that it's pretty perfect to take picture of people, they just don't get that they get photographed. There's that eye to eye contact missing. The camera isn't that bad at all (focusing screen is bright, focusing is a pain the ass). The release is too close to the shutter cocker (if you don't use a cable release it's pretty easy to interrupt the shutter). I wouldn't call it toy cam at all, the images are soft but that's kinda normal for 50 year old lenses, I guess :D

I used Hp5+ @ ISO 200 in Rodinal.
Location was Linz/Austria, Urfarhmarkt (mini version of Oktoberfest :D).

I like these shots, especially the shot of the man in the pavilion. What I see is perfectly acceptable work, regardless of kit, and any softness only assists the mood of the images. It looks to me like you've got a good camera there. Was this at a beer festival?

I've just bought some TLR gear, for the larger negatives, and it'll be the first time in about 20 years since I've use that sort of equipment. I hope remember how. :)
Cheers

Nice shots Santino, i like them. i'm a beginner so my opinion worths less than 2cents but they seems to me sharp and well contrasted. I also like the exposures, did you use a handheld meter or sunny16?
i just bought an agfa isolette and i really hope to get these results!

Not quite sure I agree with you about that, santino. The blonde woman in the second photo seems to ne noticing you or what you were doing(and a good thing that is! :D ). I do think most TLRs are less intimidating than lots of other cameras. Like the shots you've shared with us!

Great shots. I've also tried the Lubitel 2, its a great camera. I regret the fact that I don't have the pictures. A print of the negatives will kost me 5€ a frame at the local photo shop. And I don't have a darkroom (room is not dark enough :)) yet.

Greetings

The lens is a basic Cooke triplet and needs F8 or F11 or ... even if you get the focus correct, forget 5.6.

If you dont have a 40.5 mm hood, (or even if you have) some of the models will have fogging from the interior box of the camera, it is like mirror material, acrylic black paint may not be enough.

You may need to make up and glue in place an internal baffle in cardboard or similar material and paint this black. If you can fit a square shaped hole shaped piece that is near optimal. A little bit of vignetting will actually improve lens performance and not be detectable unless you are using chrome, the (any) triplets abberations off axis are bad bad.

Mine works quite well, only problem was hood and baffle, even the delay works but I would not use this, if it jammed it is strip the shotter yourself or throw away.

Some rear lens clips (locating rings) can bounce out, don't lose the ring if the camera rattles when you shake it, dont invert the camera...

P.S, remember to not pour beer (or other liquids) into hood, this is not a good idea...

Perfectly good images. The Lubitel is capable of good results as long as its used within its limitations. Best on a tripod and at middle range fstops 5.6 -11. I use a 1930's Voigtlander Brilliant for a little fun and it really is brilliant, best £5 I've spent on ebay. Many claim that the lubitel was developed from the Brilliant.

How about slides? Try some Fuji Astia 100F and you'll be astonished.

You also need to be careful about the red window, PVC tape or similar will avoid any light ingress.

The lens is pretty good within its limits even if it if is not a blad or flex, it is not a box, but it is (a) brilliant.
