First M8 lens - 28mm

Hi, could M8 shooters post photos if you have shot by the Leica 28mm f2 aspherical and the Leica 28mm f2.8 Apherical. I only have brief 2-month RF experience in 2007 with the Epson RD1s and the CV 15mm, Zeiss 50f1.5 C-sonnar.

I am being recommended to start with the Leitz 28mm f2 (called Summicron?)which is a good-to-have but being double the price of the f2.8 (called Elmarit?) and only 1 stop difference, I hope I can have some advice here on whether the f2 (called the Summicron and f2.8 the Elmarit?). Sorry, I am new to RF and definitely Leica.

I really want to own a leica lens that is reasonably affordable and I thought I would choose the 28mm (37mm equivalent due to 1.3x crop), hence I am not considering the venerable CV 28 f1.9 Ultron.

I am thinking of getting a Zeiss ZM 18 f4 in the future for ultra wides and a Zeiss ZM 50mm f1.5 C-Sonnar or a CV15mm, Zeiss ZM 50mm f1.5 csonnar or f2 planar combo.

If you have your heart set on the 28mm f/2, why not try the CV 28mm F2 at around $500 USD?

Hi Northernlights, took a look at your flickr stream and enjoyed what you've been doing with your current cameras. You obviously know what kind of photography you have in mind. Giving an idea as to the kind of photography you intend to do will help in giving suggestion to what lens you should buy. Certainly if you're not going to do too much low light stuff the 2.8 should be adequate and compact to boot.

You may wish to consider one of the versions of the pre-aspheric Elmarit 28s as well. They are highly regarded for their fingerprint and constrast rendering. Size-wise they correspond to the current Summicron 28mm --not as diminuative as the ASPH Elmarit, but not prohibitively large either.

I am taking this very unique circumstance of a 15% rebate + 15% VAT reduction + historically low GBP Pounds exchange rate to reach a price point for a brand new 28'cron at even cheaper than used rates. Hence the decision to buy such an expensive lens.

It is even more expensive than the EF 85mm f1.2L II.

Fine choice! I have one and love it; an excellent default walkabout lens. And you've taken advantage of a most attractive opportunity for a better price. Here too the Dollar is strong against the Pound, so there's a 35 Summilux on its way to me, scarcely affordable otherwise.

That reminds me that the 28 Summicron's lens hood is wider than needed for the narrower angle of view imposed by the M8's "crop factor", and that the very similar hood from the 35 Summilux ASPH not only fits the 28 Summicron but shades more effectively for M8 use.
