Well, I got the M7 from Peter Kelly (Herbkell@shaw.c here on RFF) and it took me all of a couple hours tops to run through a roll of Silvertone 400 24's.

I dev'd it yesterday in Rodinal 1:50 and just used the 1:50 APX 400 as a guide - it seemed ok to me but I've heard others say that it's really more of a 200 ISO film - regardless; I dev'd it 😀

I must say that I'm pleased at the M7's ability to generally meter a scene (no brainer metering) and assign a shutter speed accordingly in "Auto" mode. I'm also pleased at how easy it is to handle difficult backlit scenes if the photog knows what he/she is doing.

Here's some of what I've got from roaming around/in St. James Cathedral in Toronto.

crop0003.jpg

I metered the pillar in the forground here and held the M7 shutter button down to lock the reading. 1/30, f2.0, 50mm Rigid cron.

crop0005.jpg

I let the camera do it's thing here.. had the M7 on the table top tripod on the floor so all I know is the aperture. It did quite well with the wide angle!! ??, f4.0, 21mm Voigtlander

crop0016.jpg

Metered the back of this woman's head. This shot also shows the bokeh and ability of the Voigtlander 35mm Nokton. 1/24, f1.2, 35mm Voigtlander Nokton.

crop0017.jpg

Again, metering/focusing on the grey pillar here. 1/60, f1.2, 35mm Nokton.

crop0019.jpg

Focus and metering are on the metal eagle here. I'm not sure what that highlight is to the top left of the eagle but I think it's from either a reflection or such from the structure. 1/45, f1.2, 35mm Nokton.

I'm satisfied to note as well that the shutter speeds are "more" than just what is offered on the older mechanical Leicas. The 1/24, 1/45 and others that I noted during my shooting is something that I one couldn't attain via the mechanical shutters. That being said, I would still carry the M2 if I was going to be shooting in the rain 😀

Cheers and thanks for putting up with the length/size of this post.

I also love my M7

I also love my M7

Had it for 2 1/2 months and have shot about 20-25 rolls through it already. Have fun with it. I also came from digital (D2hs, D200, 5D, etc) - and find using the M very liberating. The ONLY thing I miss is being able to focus close. The RF is limited there compared to an SLR. Even with that, I prefer the M7 to any of my digitals.

Here are a few of my M7 shots

"Even with that, I prefer the M7 to any of my digitals."

Why's that then ?

What would you select if you were limited to one body and lens set ?

🙂

I love rangefinders but for me it would have to be my Canon 1DsII and 24 - 70 f2.8 lens

That's a pretty versatile combination with outstanding image quality

As much as I adore the RF's for my personal enjoyment; I too would stick with my Canon 5D and the 85 f1.2 L or the 35 f1.4 L or the 24 f1.4 L.

If you said "You gotta do street photography" then I'd choose the 5D with the 24 L.

DIgital

DIgital

Ive had the Canon 5d, 85 1.2L, 24L
Ive had the 1ds
Ive had the 10D, D30, D60

Ive had the Nikon D200, D2h, D2hs, D70 and D100 with 17-55DX, 50 1.4, 12-24, 70-200

Ive had the Oly E1 with 14-55, 50F2, 50-200

If I had to choose and keep one camera for ME it would be the M7 and a 50.

If I could keep one digital and one film, it would be the Oly E1 and M7

The Canons are just to flimsy and bulky for my tastes. The Nikons are too massive and heavy for meto want to lug them around everywhere.

The M7 is perfect in its size, quality and I love it!

SteveRD1 : I have seen you in dpreview, in peripetia of 5D and D200 🙂 anyhow change your nick name to SteveM7 😀 aah and hello 🙂

Yep, nice shots. I've only had mine for a couple weeks but I compared negs, M6and M7 parked in Auto and the exposures looked pretty good and consistent between both batches. I'm running a roll of transparency film through the M7 now to push the testing a little more.

Hi SteveRD1,

Just wanted to say I'm really surprised you'd choose the Olympus over the other digitals you listed (even the 5D?) but then again I've always found Nikons to be a bit on the heavy/large size for casual walk-around shooting too.

The main thing I dislike about digi SLRs is... zoom lenses! Give me a sharp, small prime lens any day instead of a slow (or HEAVY) zoom!

Oh, and sorry to drag the thread off-topic.

Wow lots of M7 owners here suddenly! 😀 Dave great pics and congratulations on the new body! Is it a 0.72 mag?

Well.. I think this is "typical" of the camera "life cycle"... those who owned M7s may want to move to M8s. The M7s go on the "for sale" block whilst building up "starting capital" for the M8s 😀

This happens all the time (like every 6 months) in the DSLR world.. 😀

Yes Peter, it's a 0.72 mag.

I have to admit too.. I REALLY can't speak poorly of the 35mm Nokton. I thought I could find something that I would not like about that lens but nope... so far.. so good.

Cheers

Not me mate! If they go low enough I may pick up another M7... 😀
