Seems to handle hard lighting situations well; certainly better than the uncoated Summitar would have.

Tri-X at 400 (yeah, damn slow.)

I've had a 50mm/f1.8 Serenar lens on a Leica IIIc or IIIf since 1963. I can certainly say that I've been pleased with the performance of the lens over the years.

It really is a nice shot. The Canon 50mm F1.8 is reputed to be the sharpest of the Canon 50's.

Sean's lens test seemed to suggest that the f/1.4 is a little sharper, but they're both good.

Like Leica, Canon publishes MTF charts for it lenses. The charts for the 50mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.8 are very similar (and good). I'd be happy with either lens.

Thanks, guys. I love the flare here, and I think I'll start doing a little more contre-jour (hahaha) stuff now-and-then.

It wasn't wide open: I was stopped way down, to 2.8 or 4. It was Juliana's first day of school and I had the sweats and the shakes, so I couldn't trust my focusing wide-open.

Very nice shot, Merciful.

Would love to hear your opinion on its performance relative to the 50/1.2 (on equal f-stops) once you've had more time with it.
