My M6TTL has warned me a couple of times my lens cap was on. Not normally an issue as I seem to spend most of my time picking them off the bloody floor. Slightest provacation and the Leica caps ping off.
Tend to use them as am paranoid about shutter curtain burn (even here in the UK - seriously).

Roger's suggestion about the hood hats is the best one. There is no way to miss having that on your lens. It also is opaque, so that no sun burn can occur on your shutter curtains.

Almost as bad as collapsibe lens that was not fully extended. He never used another for a wedding!

The easy lens cap solution is a cap with an extension that interfers with the VF, giving you a visible indicator.
Or, a live-view, EVF camera instead. 😉 (Just joking, no offense intended.)

By the title of the post, I thought you won a drinking contest.
Sorry to hear about the lens cap. Just did it last weekend.
I've also lost all data off a flash drive. It was on one day and just disappeared the next. So, digital has its downsides too.

IMHO a lens cap is an invitation for Murphy's Law to slide quietly up to your table, serving a big plate of unrepeatable moment with a generous side of "Doh!"
There are eighty other ways not to be ready. I feel bad enough when I lose a shot to one of those! (And of course it happens all the time.) To miss one because I Put A Big Piece Of Black Plastic Over My Lens would just kill me.

I feel your pain.
I finally got one of those lens caps w/ the little eyelet sticking out (so you can put a string on it and attach the other end of the string to the camera to avoid losing the cap). Then I painted the back of the eyelet red and always put it on the lens so that the red eyelet is in my rangefinder's view. You will definitely see it when you go to take a shot. You could always tape a little red flag of cardboard to do the same thing.

Lol I did that yesterday(about ten shots), it just didn't feel right when I would advance to the next frame. Then I noticed the rewind knob not spinning during the advance so I popped open the back and sorted it out.

Been there, done that. Have got into a routine now of making sure to take it off before hand, routine seems to be working. My wife still gets a kick out of telling me the lens cap is on after I have taken a picture of her and then laughing at my reaction. Gets me every time.

Can you not leave the cap on and compose an image of an attractive lady then point out to your wife the lens cap is on and you're checking focus technique?

For me its a habit to always take my lens cap off. With my collapsible elmar I pull it off and lock the lens into place in one motion without really thinking about it. So far I haven't screwed up. It just sort of happened that way, no special technique. You just have to make it routine or do things in an order that won't allow you to overlook that detail.

I once shot about 20 frames on a roll until I realize the film was not loaded properly and not advancing...
