Flash

Any hot-shoe flash with a pc-connector. Many flash units come with a pc-cord and fit into the hotshoe. You can also buy a $5-$10 accessory that adds a pc-cord to a hot-shoe flash. I haven't had any problems with hotshoe flashs "shorting out" when mounted onto the RF's all-metal accessory shoe.

For flashbulb, Nikon made bulb flashes which aren't very expensive.

What kind of flash can be used with a nikon s3/s2? thanks for your help.

If you really want to go retro, get a BC-5 and some GE 6B bulbs :)

Warning: "calculator "on BC-5 in in meters (all my lenses are in feet)

You can also go retro with the Tilt-a-Mite or one of its many clones. Or maybe it was a clone. The flash reflector is a fan, and the whole thing can be tilted back for bounce. Many years ago I went into our local camera shop determined to get one of the new electronic flashes. The clerk talked me into the Tit-a-Mite. He was pretty smart. It also takes almost all sizes of bulbs. I always thought bulbs had a special effect better than electronic flash.

So If I understand correctlly, I can use my contax G flash unit on the nikon S2 with a "PC cord"? what exactly does a pc cord look like and where does it attach to. Sorry if I sound so stupid, but I am not a flash user , just want to try it for fun.

f8... and be there.

Flashes with user-selectable auto-exposure settings should be just fine as long as they have a light sensor on the flash unit and don't rely on through-the-lens technology with a specific camera make/model. Nearly all flashes have auto settings.

The PC cord syncs the flash. On Nikons, it is that round metal socket near the top front corner of the camera by viewfinder window.

Nice avatar! John Gnagy! That's a name I hadn't thought of for a long time. Had a John Gnagy "Learn to Draw" kit when I was 8!

Okay, I'll bite...where is the best place tp buy a BC-5? And what is the difference between it and the BCB-V?

They're pretty common on e-bay or at Pacific Rim. The trick is to find one with a capacitor that can still be charged (the correct battery can still be purchased). I lucked out, and the one I got worked, although I also have a BC-7 (for the Nikon F) which I cannot get to charge.

I have never found a capacitor replacement for these nor a way to "reform" them.

Okay, I found a couple of BC-5's but now we must find a capcitor or a way to charge them...anyone?

BTW. .. jonmanjiro has been using, I believe, a SB30 on his SP...might go that route if a capacitor is a problem.

Nowhere near as retro as Highway 61's S2 and flash setup, but here's my SP + SB30 setup. It does the job, but I don't use it often.
