I just bought a xpan w/ 45mm lens and it was rated in excellent condition for $1,500 from a reputable dealer. I got it in the mail today and was very happy with the initial inspection...glass is clean(very clean), curtains are perfect and very little chipping of the paint. I was expecting flaking of the paint as it was listed, but I did not expect a crack in the body. It looks to be minor...it is below the viewfinder (the piece that comes out) and the metal is cracked all the way back. Like if somebody tried to really force out the diopter.
Some I'm a little pissed about that, since I was just expecting scratches and "normal" wear.
Should it be something I'm worried about? How would you proceed? Am I just over reacting? 😕

Thanks. Jason

I'd at least give the dealer a call. I don't know that I would be overly worried about it. but price wise maybe you can come to some agreement for a reduction. It could be that they didnt' notice it. I admit when I check cameras at the store I am at, I don't always inspect every inch of the body, you check the optics, you check the functions, you look at the bottom to see if its scuffed up or anything, you look for brassing etc... but I suppose its possible they could have just missed it.... I'd like to think i wouldn't miss a crack though!!!

Thanks.

Thanks.

RdEoSg - good advice, especially since you are in the business. I looked over the body and there are no dents which would indicate it being dropped...I guess I saw the crack and just needed to vent...a crack in your new toy will do that. I also loaded batteries in last night and it looks like about 30 rolls have gone thru it, so that made me happy.

I'll give them a call and see what they say, maybe I can get a discount because I want to keep the camera.

Thanks again.

I would return it immediately. A crack in the body is a serious issue and could be disastrous later on. If it was not described then you are under no obligation to keep it or pay for it. I am becoming very wary of buying equipment through the mail. Even if you have to pay a little more for a camera in better condition, you will be better off. Dealers must be held accountable for their descriptions, mistaken or not.

Call em up. Send it back.

I'd never keep a camera with a crack as large as you say. Especially if it wasn't described as such.

I called the dealer and it seems that they will only take it back. I also took the camera to a reliable locate shop and the store manager looked it over and stated that for the price I paid, I should send it back. His statement is a crack is a serious flaw.
I again called the dealer I purchased it from and got the manager name and will try to talk to him tomorrow...but it looks like the camera is going back and I will be on the hunt again 🙁

Thanks for your help everyone.

Well at least they are standing behind it and will give you your money. Good luck in your hunt! Dont get too discouraged. They are about enough that you should find another.

I feel bad for Dodd Camera in Cleveland for something similar that they have to deal with right now.
I went up there this past week to see what was in the junk case, and saw a Mamiya 7 (II) with an 80mm lens. The lens had no hood or cap, and the camera seemed kind of... Scuffed. "Well used." The price was $1,600 or something silly-high.
As the salesman was explaining how they got the camera, and that the user traded it for something else, I found it: the crack. Mamiya 7's crack on the upper right hand side of the camera--- there's a thin spot in the plastic. This had the standard "oh, rats, I dropped my Mamiya 7!" crack. Easily missed.

Easily missed.

I hope they can sell it. I don't even want to know if it works well enough or not. Dodd will be out of money and a friendly salesman will have to take his knocks over it.

Send it back. A crack IS a big deal. Good luck!
