Flickr. Am I the only one who likes it?

I have a lot of mixed feelings about it. Sure, it is about the pictures... so is Google Image Search... which is what flickr is apparently trying to copy.

But the key functionality and usability I used is missing. Someone else mentioned it a few posts above. I could see +/- 2 pictures in a set/group. Now I can't see any, and I can't tell which set/group/list I'm looking in. I can't switch to a different set/group very easily anymore, either.

I usually don't pay attention to flickr comments. 95% are: "OMG GREAT BOKEH!" But I can block comments with a browser filter or just resize the window. But I wanted that info to the right. Now I look at a picture, scroll down, scroll back up, go forward, scroll down, scroll up, go forward, wonder where I am, etc. And the functionality I mentioned in the previous paragraph isn't there, either.

One thing that I like about Flickr is that it is fast. I can now upload a large TIFF file and it renders on screen with much the same speed as a smaller JPEG. Also, I can now load large TIFFs... an infinite number. That makes for nice off-site backup.
The larger size of the photos and the scrolling display work for me. If I want a smaller subset then I go to my sets.
The Ken Burns slideshow and the homepage are not to my liking, but I can work around Ken and ignore the latter.
For those that are leaving a free 1TB, I can't imagine that there isn't some good use for that 1TB. How about saving your best images as full size Tiffs? I can see those that sell, or want to present their work looking elsewhere, but that doesn't mean that leaving Flickr is the best choice. If I were an artist, I would probably display elsewhere.. but I'm not. I keep 99.9% of my work private.

All the info on individual pics is still there, including thumbnails of pics before and after. I would redesign the info to run left to right instead of the legacy style of top to bottom and place the comments below but it is all still there complete with clickable set and group notifications. And if you view sets in the contact sheet format the banner shows the name of the person and set more prominently than before.

I prefer the new flickr to the flickr of old but then I also prefer Marissa to Steve. The new flickr seems to be all about the image which is the way it should be. I just viewed it on my old netbook using w-lan and it worked flawlessly. It loaded fast and looked good.

I'm into it. I have a large monitor, and when searching for images, I disliked how the maximum size you could select for your results was "medium", leaving tons of screen real estate wasted. Flickr is an image sharing site, so show me images in the best way possible.

I also like the endless scrolling, although if you select an image and then go back to the search results, you lose your place. The other thing I'm not too keen on is how the background defaults to black and there's no way to change it. I'm sure both of these will change in the future, so I'm not too hung up on them.

...I also like the endless scrolling, ...

All fine and good until you're searching flickr for something specific and the results are skewed because some lazy moron uploaded the entire contents of his SD card and tagged ALL his photos with "biogon voigtlander leica 35mm 15mm summicron rd1 lightroom ltm-mount m-mount noctilux asph heliar india china japan 35/2 f4.5 f8 epson rangefinder hexanon f2.8 summaron summicron skirt dress girl zeiss cv zm 135 holga iphoto"

Then you sit at the PC tapping the End button trying to get past what seems like hundreds of irrelevant pictures to get to the ones you want to look at. You're out of luck if using an ipad or mobile. Searching/viewing groups is more focused but not everyone puts their photos in group pools.

I do wish there was a way to block certain users, but you can try slightly more advanced searching by adding a "-" before anything you don't want to see.. I do it all the time. Sometimes I'll just want to see images taken on film, so if I'm searching for something shot with a 50mm Summicron, my search string might look something like this:

"50mm summicron, -m8, -m9"

I've had mega search strings to get rid of a lot of crap, like -HDR, -cat, -Nikon, -Canon, etc. It takes a little more effort up front, but you will get to what you want much quicker.

Yes, I do see that ... as long as I scroll down below the image to read it. However, I like to look at pictures and read about them, which is a very different experience than I like to look at pictures or read about them.

It is almost identical to lightbox mode but with one line below, a menu in the top-left corner, and a search box in the top-right corner. I see one giant image that almost fills the entire browser window with no information except the title, (only) the first line of the caption, the add button, and the poster's username at the bottom. If I scroll the image out of view to read more information, I scroll the image out of view! If I want to look at the image again, I have to scroll again. One or the other.

I'm hanging around just to see if they will allow us to turn of endless scrolling and justified (read jumbled) page organization.

Subjective..............

Not mine...it's as fast as before..

No problems here.........

I'd also say that the performance reached the level before the update. Only thing that does not work on my mac is the slideshow. Just wanted to look for the ken burns stuff some people mentioned 😱 I lived without the slideshow before, so I don't care.

An informal survey among my contacts points to a big drop in photo views on their streams.

One contact mentioned he averaged 1500-1700 views a day before the switch, to about 400 a day since. Others have seen similar drops. I normally don't get many views, but its been pretty meager since the change.

I think there are two reasons for this. One, everyone's most recent photo now shows up large on all their contact's home pages. Why click on the photostream when you're already seeing the most recent picture in large size? I know I haven't clicked onto more than one or two other people's streams since the switch. I can't be the only one.

Secondly, the endless scroll doesn't work. On my home page, I can scroll and scroll to see new pics from my contacts, but eventually I get to the bottom where the thing comes on and says "Loading more pictures". Then when they load, there's a gap. I have to scroll back UP to see what I've missed! It does this on all three computers I use regularly. Not being a fan of the endless scroll in the first place, its just maddening to have to scroll back up to see what I've missed. So I just don't. End result - less photo views.

Are we talking about the counter that is displayed on the photo detail page? My average is about 30 clicks per photo. Not per day but over the whole time it's on flickr.

So a drop from 1700 to 400 a day must be huge hit in the face of an ego. Maybe I should offer an internet service that creates photo clicks. 5 EUR a month for more clicks anyone? 🙄
