focusing square in early rangefinders?

Did the first Leica's and other early rangefinders have the focusing square like i have in my ZI ?

Round in early Leicas. But there have been many patterns, including whole viewfinders that were sliced in half as a rangefinder, with the top as one window and the bottom as the other window.

As far as I know, that was the only one with a coupled RF and no VF. Well, unless you count large format rangefinders with removable viewfinders.
