Fomapan B@W film

Apparently this is a pretty good B/W film made in the Czech Republic. I just bought a 100 foot roll of it in ISO 200.

I prefer to use D76 1:1 with B/W films.

Does anyone have experience with this film, and can anyone give me development times for it using D76 1:1?

Freestyle has it rebadged as Arista EDU Ultra, and I thought it a buy at $19.99.

Ted

That's how I bought it. I have used it with xtol, rodinal, and diafine, no d76, though, sorry. Would you like my times/temps with these?

It's very good stuff. The 200 is probably best viewed as a having a true speed of 125 and developed as per Plus-X in D-76. In Diafine, my best results have been when I rate it at box speed. Personally I like the Foma 100 better, but none of their films are stinkers and I gottta admit I like all of them better than Ilfords.

Enjoy! And post lots of your results!

OK, William, thanks.

I'll set the camera at ISO 200 and develop it as if it were Plus X?

The reason I was attracted to it is because I belong to a W650 (a retro Kawaski motorcycle made to look exactly like a 1966 Triumph 650 Bonneville) forum and one of the members posted a picture of his motorcycle. It was such a crisp b/w shot with a great tonal range that I asked him what film he used, That's how I learned the film existed.

Years ago I used some EFKE slow stuff and really liked it.

Hey, Jano:

Yes, I would like the times and temps.

Ted

I just checked the Massive Dev Chart at digitaltruth.com and it gives this:
Fomapan T200 D-76 1+1 EI200 7 minutes 20C

William

Ted,

Do you have a W650? I looked at one when they came out but decided to save my pennies for a new Triumph made Bonnie instead. I'm still saving... :bang: GAS keeps getting in the way :D Ah, but for a Thruxton 900 in cafe racer dress...

William

Hi Ted, here's what I like:

For Diafine, I shoot it at iso 100.

For rodinal, I used 1:50, and tried a variety of times from 8.5 to 10m, with temp variations of 20 and 21C. Shot at box speed, 200. All came out looking nice, a wee bit grainy in empty parts (like skies).

I can't seem to find my notes for foma in xtol :/ But the results were very nice! I think I just started with the times/temps on digitaltruth, assuming box speed at 200.

No, it's not. J&C Classic is re-branded Fortepan, not Formapan. So is older Freestyle Arista.edu.

Brian:

Actually it's "fomapan."

What is 20C in fahrenheit?

So now I've got two different development times for D76 1:1.

Digitaltruth says 7 minutes at 20C.

J&C says 9 minutes (but does not give temperature). And maybe they are
referring to fortepan rather than fomapan?

William: Yes, I've got a Kawasaki W650. Much better than the 1966 Triumph 650 Bonneville that it was modeled after in terms of looks, and very well-built and trouble-free.

I took the badges off the tank so now it's a great conversation piece as no one knows what it is. You can buy them used for $3500 (the bike, not the badges) so you'll still have money left over for GAS, whereas GAS would be out of the question if you bought a new Triumph.

Ted

I would second T-Max, around 8 mins at 20 deg C, also very good is pyro - you will get a spanking neg every time with great gradation and almost zero grain.

The film is good stuff. I shoot it alot. Bought 40 rolls of 120 so far from Freestyle over the last few months. Been developing it in the Arista Premium (Clayton) developer with good results. I forgot the times for D76, but am about to try the same thing, so I'd like to know how your turns out.

Fomapan (arista.edu ultra 200) in Clayton F76+ :

I just ordered some Foma 100 in Artista EDU Ultra form. Mine is destined to be burned at 200 and dropped in Diafine. I have read a lot of good things here, at Pnet and APUG about this film.

Did you ask him what developer and technique he used? One thing, IMO, someone should never get married to is a certain developer. It's a look you are wanting; find out what combo got it.

It's one thing to settle on a certain film/developer combo and learn it to it's utmost but only when you've determined it's getting you what you want.

Do not get me wrong, I like D-76, especially 1-1 and used with Delta 100, but it certainly is not the best developer for all films.
