Is it because of the size/bulk?

Well, I use them wherever their advantages outweigh their disadvantages. But there are enough cases where I do not use one. Apart from size issues, effectiveness can be a weak point as well.

On some of my cameras and/or lenses, a effective hood would obstruct the finder or meter, on some others (notably wides) only squares or petal shapes have any significant effect, but these are pointless on lenses with a front thread that turns with focusing or aperture changes...

First of all, I never got used to using one. Second is the size and trouble.

I have one that came with my Super Press 23, and there have been times when I used it. It is a rubber version and is always on my 100mm lens. I have used them on other lenses, especially telephoto if they were built in, but only if I found flare to be a problem, and it usually isn't. Keeping the lens clean goes a long way on that. I have them for my Fujinon 28mm and 135mm. But it is almost impossible to get a Fujinon to flare. My Spiratone 18mm came with a hood, and I always carry it, but I don't think I ever used it either. I don't have any for my Kiev lenses.

Honestly, if it comes with a lens I will use it as long as its not too big. A lot of hoods, IMO, are way too expensive and I just won't pay.

I always use UV filters, though.

With multi-coated SLR lenses, i rarely use them. Low flare, and you can detect when flare is occurring. You can also use your hand as a shade in the rare case that flare does occur.

I tend to use them with RF's. You do not know until after the picture was taken if flare was a problem.

I have always used hood with my lens...they all come with the lens and for the sake of 'completion' i suppose. Have to say they make my 50 lux and 28 cron quite a bit larger.
Not sure how big a problem flare is going to be for me without the hoods.
Might just go without it one of these days just for fun......

I was lazy, didn't want the extra bulk, and figured I could use my hand to shield the lens. Then, I had a few choice shots ruined by flare and sunspots. Now I'm a lot more hood-friendly. I pretty much leave on the hood just to keep in habit.

I'm even looking for hoods for a couple lenses that didn't come with them.

I normally use them but to get a used one from the US would cost me about $65 Australian and 2/3 of that cost is postage. So I have no lenshoods for my G1.

I often take a camera for reasons of size, so then I might not take a hood. If so, I'll be aware of the risk from flare but for most of my shots it's not a real issue.

I do have hoods for most of my lenses but not all - a couple of wide-angle SLR lenses, for instance. The only RF wide-angles I have don't really need a hood except in extreme circumstances, they have quite recessed front elements.

Filters I tend to have on whenever possible though...

Bulk, bad. Mechanical protection, good. Always had them always used them but the bulk annoys me. My Zeiss lenses don't flare and I'll often go without, but that hood in my avatar was mangled in a fall, saving the lens and camera. I love ditching the 35 Summicron hood for evenings and cloudy days: much tinier package.

I have a few uncoated and lightly coated rf lenses which got me in the habit of using hoods. Like Brian however I seldom use hoods on 35 SLR's.

One other issue, once when I put a hood on my Hassy 80 (which also had a UV on it) I wound up with some vignetting. Unpleasant surprise there!

I've been wanting a hood for my 50/2 summicron but those sellers at ebay just won't reply my e-mails!
So I got myself a nice UV filter for it and a week later a friend of mine dropped my camera. Guess what? The UV filter shattered to pieces. Luckily there was no damage on the lens or camera though.

So I thought, this might be the time to get BOTH hood and another UV filter for the ultimate protection. I won't mind the extra size or trouble though as they give me peace whenever my camera falls to the ground.

Heavystar on Ebay offers a small round hood that does fine on the 'cron 28 and is cheap enough to give it a try.

I never leave home w/o one (hood). Not trying to start an argument, but I also don't see how any UV filter could be of equal optical quality to a lens so I never use one.

Too bulky and big for my tastes. Reason I shoot M's is for their compact profile, and a lens hood is an unwelcome addition for me, size-wise. Never shot with them on slr's either.

Also, as I shoot only black and white, I don't see flare as a bad thing, which I might if I were shooting colour.
