The Sigma DP1 defines a class by itself, IMO.

It's been a few weeks since it's release and there isn't a new forum for it yet.

How odd!

I wouldn't mind it. The forum at DPReview is awful, everyone just argues about whether or not it's any good, and then whines about bad reviews. It'd be nice to read a forum in which people are assumed to basically like the thing and discuss actually using it.

That said, there would probably be about one post a week.

Yeah but...it lends itself to being used in the same way one uses an RF.

Ultimately though I think you're right.

I consider the DP-1 to be the spiritual successor to the original Leicas. So YES, because more big sensor compacts will be on their way.

My M2 is looking at me and I find it very hard to compare with a Sigma DP1.I do have a GRD and RD-1 so I am not against digital but I don't think there is any comparison.I used to carry a small Nikon SLR with the 50mm E lens in my coat pocket but just because it fitted in my pocket it didn't make it a Rangefinder.

To me the question is not whether DP1 is a rangefinder. I agree that it isn't. The question is whether the sensor technology and other features of the DP1 (such as size) should be built into future digital RFs. That makes the DP1 worthy of its own forum here at RFF.

this is my PERSONAL OPINION...but if i had it my way...there would be no slr forun, no point & shoot etc...only rangefinders, pure & simple.

there are lots of forums that cover everything and when we started here it was only rf and it was a real sanctuary and i would love to return to that.

but then, it's not my forum.

Have you ever seen the horrible images the dp1 produces when shot into the sun? For that reason alone it should be banned from rff.

Imagine if any of your expensive rff lenses produced such crap on your film or digital rangefinders! You would be sick I'm sure and come here looking for help.

Besides, there's no gear to buy for the DP1 except for exotic finders and wrist straps.

So you'd like to BAN discussion of cameras because of perceived poor quality? I'm new here, but really, come on. Not having a DP1 forum makes perfect sense, but not for that reason.

And call me crazy, but personally, I like that effect from the DP1. I have even been doing it intentionally from time to time--there's a little chromatic explosion, almost like the ghosts on your retina after looking at bright light.

If I really needed to have gay flair in any of my images I would write a photoshop action to add it for me in post.

Seriously now, this is not a feature to be exploited but a defect. Even my 25 Euro Canonet takes better pictures than this thing.

I won't call you crazy because yours is the same argument all DP1 owners are currently making. It's nuts!

What's even worse, this piece of expensive tinfoil ain't a rangefinder!

Although I'm no stranger to digital, I don't see that the DP-1 should warrant a forum here. I agree that the discussion forums on dpreview are lame, but I found another site where discussions of cameras like the DP-1 and GRD are at a better level:

Wow! Any camera that's this hotly debated in RFF needs it's own forum. Pehaps under "Non-Rangefinder Cameras" as "Larger Sensor Digital Compacts".

I think the dp-1 would probably be quite rangefinder-like in use - more rangefinder-like then an SLR.

I don't know... Posts for it should probably be in the "compacts" forum. I'd love to see more shots taken with it though!

That's what I mean.

Does anyone remember that the first Leica wasn't a rangefinder either?

So what if Sigma made an interchangable lens DP-X?

And what if they put an optical rangefinder on it?

Sound familiar?
