I fully agree, I am here for the rangefinders. ..... if this becomes a forum for point & shoot stuff and (D)SLR then I am out....
You might notice that there ARE already forums for cameras other than rangefinders here on RFF.
And threatening to leave is a requirement for membership here. As well as stomping off in a huff, vowing never to return. Done it at least a couple times myself. So go for it. See you when you get back.

The Sigma DP1 is in a class of its own. A high IQ, compact size, large sensor digital camera. I hope, competition will be forced to strike back, in which case it would make sense to start with a dedicated forum.
Funny to read all the emotional posts concerning the DP1. I guess most of the bashers never held one in their hands. It is simply a great camera. IQ wise light zones ahead of all small sensor compacts and definitely at the level of some consumer dslr. I have mine since 6 weeks and think it is one of my best camera buys ever, despite its warts (sluggish AF, mediocre LCD).

jamxo, just out of curiosity, are you shooting jpeg B&W mode, or shooting RAW and desaturating in post? I've been doing the latter, but I wish there were a B&W RAW mode...as unintuitive as that sounds, what with the Foveon goodness, I'd like to get to shoot high quality B&W without ever seeing the color image.
Also, is that first pic with the pop-up flash?

Mabel, So far Ive only been shooting in raw, then importing into photo pro and not really changing much, just getting a good starting image with no loss of detail, then opening in PS CS3 and doing black and white/curve adjustments.
I've heard the DP1's JPEG's dont really do the camera justice, hence why I havent tried them, although I am finding having to go through Photo Pro for my processing a little annoying!
And yes, the 1st shot is with the pop up flash, manual mode, with a longer shutter i think

Same here...I'm using Lightroom mostly...

Clearly this image as well as this other one here demonstrate that this is a consistent design flaw of all dp1s. In the first link the defect has overpowered the image to such a degree that the point of interest has become the gay flare itself.
Because 15-20% of my outdoor daytime street shooting photos are shot in the direction of the sun I would be forced to carry an additional camera for those particular shots, thereby eliminating the portability feature and perceived advantage of the dp1.
If this defect could be corrected in a firmware update I assume it would have been done already. More likely is the high probability that this error cannot be fixed with software.

I'd like to see a DPI forum here on RFF given the GRD and GRD2 are well responded to.
I have both the DP1 and the GRD2 and they slot right in alongside my rangefinders for current work. The only forum i enjoy frequenting regarding the DP1 is Guy Mancuso's GetDPI forum which is very good.

No, the consensus is that it's a fabulously flawed camera in its current version. Even the expert reviewers at dpreview have come to this very conclusion, much to the dismay of many early and eager adopters who don't wish to be constantly reminded that they paid lots of money for a camera which, by today's standards, is slow and buggy.

I bought mine long before Dpreview's "review" and it delivers the goods for me. It handles differently to my GRD2 but then so does my Plaubel Makina to my Fuji GW690 III, the former costing twice the price. The DPI sits well in my stable of cameras and i don't regret the price or its so called "reported" faults neither am i "dismayed".

The movie rendition on this incredible revolutionnary machine is just gorgeous! It's like the movie rendition on film but in digital! Check out some sample onlines it is just very great with blurred background! One thing that is annoying is the low resolution but still it is perfect camera for amateur film! Not exactly fitting the RFF forum but, IMHO it is just the best feature of that camera!

Simon, you are correct to put quotes around the word review. DPReview is not the gold standard for how good a piece of equipment is or whether it's worth buying or not. I'm not going to go into details right now but I just wish more people would realize that site is just another reference tool and shouldn't be taken as gospel.I bought mine long before Dpreview's "review" and it delivers the goods for me. There people go again, praising an overpriced yet significantly flawed tool and having the impudence to criticize an accurate review. Gospel! Some people will grab the most extreme words out of thin air, just to win a lost argument, won't they?
If they really need better quality in a compact camera, smart camera buyers would purchase a used Minilux or equivalent film p&s and 100 rolls of color film. By the time these films have been shot and developed, a newer and properly functioning camera from Sigma will hopefully be there to replace the dp1.

Sounds like you're referring to me. If you read the beginning of the thread you'll see that I am not a fan of the DP-1 so I'm not trying to "win a lost argument". However I'm glad some people out there are able to look past "reviews" like some of the ones found on DPReview and other websites, and recognize a good tool for their specific needs. There people go again, praising an overpriced yet significantly flawed tool and having the impudence to criticize an accurate review. In fact I agree with many of the points the reviewer made but that doesn't mean it's not a good camera for some people, and I don't take any web reviewer's word for anything until I've tried the product myself.
Anyway, I didn't mean to get personal. I meant that people, in the broad sense, seem to be taking sites like that as gospel. Just a trend I'm noticing lately,

Kevin, YOU NEED TO STOP CARING. You don't own the camera. You never have to experience its awfulness. WHO CARES what we think?

Kevin this response just makes me smile - you proudly list all your camera equipment in your signature then imply that others like myself who actually own a DPI and have used it have an "impudence to criticize an accurate review" and should have be "smarter" and buy a film P&S instead???
I have owned the Minilux (which has a 40/2.4 not a 28) and the Gr1s and the DPI is a completely different camera in the way it handles.
The GRD got mixed reviews when it first came out with its very long RAW right time but its made some superb images in the hands of fellow RFF members like Mitch Alland.
Have you actually tried working with the DPI or even opened a RAW file in Sigma Photo Pro to see for yourself what the camera is capable of capturing?
Your comments sound to me like a kind of camera snobbery.
Who really cares what anyone buys so long as the camera in question works for them?
The point of this OP question was should we have a separate DPI forum? Not should one buy or not buy the DPI??? I still think we should have a specific forum where I can read about other peoples' experiences of the camera and the RAW softwares. Right now the only constructive forum for this is found on GETDPI. Why should we have one here when it's a RFF based site? for me its simply because i'm sure they are other DPI users who also own RF's like myself and so they're experiences would be of interest to me.

The argument that there are superb images taken with a camera can be said about just any camera, such as Holgas or Lomo 135VSes, and yet we don't have a Holga or a Lomo 135VS forum and neither are we going to get one, hopefully. The GRD got mixed reviews when it first came out with its very long RAW right time but its made some superb images in the hands of fellow RFF members like Mitch Alland. That's fine. I'm under the impression that there are about three such people here at RFF, and I don't think that warrants its own forum. Since a lot of DP1 talk will be about comparison with other digital compacts, like in your own post, a general "digital compacts" forum would seem to make much more sens to me.The point of this OP question was should we have a separate DPI forum? On (German, at least) Usenet the creation of a new Usenet newsgroup is made to depend on a critical mass of traffic. A lot of thematically potentially interesting newsgroups are not created because there wouldn't be enough discussion to support them. That doesn't mean that people can't talk about these things, it only means that you discuss them in some common forum with something else. Just like you don't get a separate schoolyard for girls between 14 and 16 discussing Clinique-brand eyeliners; they are discussing these things on the common schoolyard with everybody else, and people still get to talk. People tend not to participate somewhere where there is one post every couple of months; the 14-to-16-year-old-Clinique-eyeliner schoolyard is guaranteed to be a pretty empty and boring place. The Internet is full of dead forums for something interesting. I like the traffic argument a lot and would like to see it applied elsewhere, such as at RFF.

Philippe, a "digital compacts" forum would suit me fine as a compromise if there really were such few members wanting to share info. My specific compact comparison was in relationship to Kevin's post about user choice in this particular thread.
I'm happy to hop between different forum sites regarding matters that relate to my specific needs at the time - though trawling through the Dpreview forums (for me) can become time consuming but nevertheless there is useful information to be found.
What i like about some of these internet forums is not so much what is written but the opportunity to meet like minded people and more often than not (as has been the case with me) - meet them in the flesh

The F30 and family make the DP1 irrelevant
The F30 and family make the DP1 irrelevant
The sensor technology in the F30 and some successors is incredible.
The technology is so impressive, that it has transcended Photography and moved into many other areas that may be more profitable.
Here's a brief writeup of the technical merits of the sensor:
http://www.ipfrontline.com/depts/article.asp?id=18624&deptid=5
The DP1 is no DSLR sized sensor, it is a funky based design with at best 80% the area of an APS-C sensor, and maybe 3x the area of the Fujifilm CCDs.

No forum. It's a point and shoot without a viewfinder! Not even a direct-view camera. It's just expensive, which makes it kind of like a leica. If they charged $900 for the Fuji F30 because of it's high-iso quality, would we consider giving it a forum?
It lends itself to being used like a rangefinder?
I don't really get that. Why the Dp-1 more than the F30?
I never really understood "rangefinder-like". Direct-view scale focusing, okay. But a camera without any viewfinder? We have to have principles.![]()
