Ack, I've been struggling with this for months and really need to settle this. I print with a black border around the image, whether in the darkroom or digitally. I really like how the image stands alone on the paper with just a sliver of the negative's border between it and the white.
I just can't figure out how to handle this when framing though. I've had a couple framed professionaly and they suggested to let the mat touch onto the border so a little shows but none of the white paper around the border. They did a great job but it didn't feel perfect to me.
So I think I've two ways to go.
1. The traditional way of putting the mat slightly into the image area. Optimizes image size, it's easy to frame, everybody does it. The image jumps out at you more I think.
2. Put the mat slightly outside the image's border. I've seen Cartier Bresson prints like this and loved it. I think it really showcases the printing and draws you into the image. But you end up with a slightly smaller image.
I think I'll just have this lying around for a while and decide later...
How do you guys frame?
(PS I also posted this at NikonCafe, for those who frequent both and were wondering if they'd already seen this)

Get a better framer. The solution is to double-mat with a black inner mat and a white outer mat. Leave enough room for the inner mat to show through.
