They usually do an ok job as the machine is automatic. The problem is whether the local place you go to keeps the chemicals fresh, the machine clean and the operators and assistants are not buffoons. I used to use a Walgreen's near my flat for my C-41 (particularly XP-2) until one day a quarter of the roll had heavy streaks and blotches and pretty not been developed properly. I brought it back in (they apparently did not even check it before giving it to me) and they apologized saying the chemicals were old and had clogged up the machine (or something along those lines). They offered my money back for the developing but required I give them the entire roll back too. Since 3/4 of the roll was fine for scanning I explained that I surely wanted my money back as they ruined a good portion of the roll but that I wanted to keep it for the usable frames. They refused. I kept the roll, did not get my money back and never went to that one again.
I started using one near my office then and used them for a few weeks until I saw the operator rolling up a roll of mine (I get it develop only, do not cut) and then grabbing one end and puuuuuuulling to tighten it so she could get it into a film cansiter. Of course I almost hit the roof but patiently explained how that scratches the negs (I was clear when I dropped it off that I wanted them to just carefully fold the hanging roll into an envelope) They said they would be more careful next time. A couple days later when I was simply passing the photo lab area buying something else I saw her doing it again....trouble is the local Wolf Camera here in downtown SF also did that on a roll of film I dropped off to them for development------idiots!
So, for me it's back to Adolph Gasser's...until they close down anyway....which should be any time now.
