Fuji GFX50S medium format is here.

I'm sure T/S and leaf shutter lenses will arrive in time.
The first 6 lenses look like a serious commitment.
This does not appear to be an experiment that will be killed off or neglected.

You have to hand it to Fuji.
Reminds me of the GW670/690 cameras Utilitarian and maybe even clunky but fully functional and ready to bring home the goods.
It's not as slick as the Hassy or Leica S but it sure looks the business.
The lenses are excellent choices to start a system.
I can only imagine how many adds and magazine covers will be shot in the future with that f2/100mm.

I'm not and don't expect to be in the market for such a system.
The trickle down benefits in the smaller sensor cameras are sure to come though.
Fun stuff 😀

What constitutes medium format these days? The sensor doens't even come close to 6x4.5. I whipped up this little diagram to illustrate.

edit: forgot about 127. Looking at the specs it looks very close to 127 with its 4x3 frame.

Once again you skip 6x7 and leave all of us Pentax 6x7 users shaking our heads. It's like we don't even matter!

Behold the glory of 6*9 film cameras! Available now in the $400 range.

Or wait for this dead end tech to come out, for thousands and thousands of $$

😀

I have a 6x9 Medalist and love it. There was a thread where I was considering a 6x9 folder, but that GAS has been abated for now.

Acquiring a Retina II, Nikonos II, XA1, and Rollei XF35, along with a Bronica S2 and 3 lenses, distracted me.

But I do own the Bronica and a 6x7 and a Mamiya C330F. Relative pennies on the dollar and amazing images.

He also left out 6x12, 6x17 and 6x24. 😀

Thing is there are already medium format digital sensors that are larger than this one. Heck even the Mamiya ZD that is 12 years old has a larger but lower resolution sensor.

I certainly hope this new camera doesn't have the flaw of so many of Fuji's previous MF cameras- noise. The clunk and whir of the 645s, the CLANG of the GW series. I hope they noticed one thing always mentioned about the GF670- silence!

Fuji and Sony will be the last two standing. Well, Leica and Hasselblad and Ilford, but they will have to accept life in very small niches.

I love the modular design. I love the low weight: body ~800 g, less than a 5 D Mark IV.

They were clamming it should be cheaper with a lens than the Hasselblad X1D.

The lenses are uniform in their resolving ability and supposed to stellar: 100 MP resolution.... That sounds like something designed for NASA and scary for anyone with a facial blemish...

I love the physical dials and aperture control.

I know its way to early for this, but what will the GFX 70 be like!!!

If career Plan A falls through, then Ill just buy this and make a living.

Thanks for the graphic. This sensor size should not be called "medium format" if it can't even approach 6x4.5 size!!

For all you SCTV fans out there:

As Harry Filth would say, "Its big, but its not big enough Cal".

We are a truly horrible lot. Fuji has its crop sensor in the XT/XE series and we whine.
Why can't they make a FF sensor, we complain?
Then they bring out this bigger than FF sensor, and we whine.

Ah the joys of the internet!
🙂

Looks really interesting, same size sensor as the Pentax 645Z in a remarkably compact package. With the short back-focus, it would seem feasible to adapt Pentax Z and Leica S lenses...

Medium format film has been fudging the frame dimensions all along: the nominal 6x4.5 is more like 5.5x4.1 for instance. 😉

I think they nailed it. A bigger sensor would have been far more expensive. Consider the price of the larger Phase One sensor camera. As it stands this is significantly bigger than 35mm sensor, but the camera itself is no bigger than a 35mm digital SLR. If they can keep body price under 5k US they will kill it.

Yea, I don't care if this isn't 645 size. It's still amazing regardless. Give it a few more years and they'll have a 4x5 sensor out there 🙂.
