Here's the Lensmate Thumbgrip, old version.
The new one is not as slim, and can be unmounted easier. This one is clipped onto the little nub indicationg the EC Dial position and is hard to take off the camera (but you don't lose it easily) to mount a flash.
Not a very good picture. As soon as I'll get it I'll post a pic on the camera.

-Fourthly I just KNOW I will take pictures with the cap on

You should be able to avoid this problem - the OVF screen overlay turns very dim when you press the shutter button if you've got the lens cap on.
It's a good idea to test it, so that you can recognise the "look", when it happens for real...!

This is brilliant - thanks! Very easy to distinguish here at night. Will try in daylight tomorrow.

I cut out a little strip of red adhesive from a sticker and applied it horizontally to the dial. This makes it very obvious to see if you bumped and turned the wheel.
Thanks for tip... But I broke down ages ago and bought the thumb grip w/ the ec protection. I might try that on my xp1 though.

I carefully (using a magnifier) filed down the little nub on the thunbgrip just a bit so it doesn't catch on the camera body notch so tightly. Easy to remove for external flash.

I rather like the fact that it sits very tight and won't come off easily, it seems part of the camera. And then I really don't use flash anyways, at least no external flash and the internal very rarely.

Elsewhere on RFF I previously posted and asked about living with the R-D1s and X100 - did one find more use etc. or was one superfluous and got good responses to that.
After having strolled the streets of Brussels (where I currently live - don't ask, don't tell...) there is only one regret remaining: why, oh, why did not I (re)buy one before?
Still have loads to learn, but man (m/f) do I enjoy that optical viewfinder and the speedy and precise AF. So far the exposure compensation dial has not proved a problem - apart from the user forgetting that he turned it :bang: - and that after removing the warning from the viewfinder
If anybody is on the fence and reading this: go for it! That is if you enjoy good equipment that invites you to shoot. The X100s may have a better sensor, higher resolution etc., but I just adore the files from this little beauty. I shall not enter into an idiological discussion of what is the "right" metering of a scene, but to my eyes the X100 is the best metering camera I have ever owned beating even Nikon's best implementations of the matrix metering system. And that says something.
I suspect the X100 will soon enjoy a joint pole position with my Epson as the camera yielding the highest joy in use - greater praise I cannot bestow
Thanks for all your responses.
Xpanded - or should that be X100panded

could be useful, but i don't think that would help much for scale focusing, considering how the focus distance changes depending on how fast you turn the ring.

A fly in the ointment - a warning...!
A fly in the ointment - a warning...!
Yesterday the weather was very sunny and I managed to get out and shoot a few sensor checking pictures - i.e. f:16 against a uniform area - in this case the blue sky.
And there it was - the fly in the ointment. A dust speck looking almost like a tyrannosaurus reX100 - only smaller of course...
It is the second time I buy an X100 and it is the second time the body has dust problems :bang:.
The first (very early serial number) had it in the EVF which admittedly was far worse. And now this on the sensor (serial number 24 - so apparently made last year in Q4).
I am aware this is not the end of the world (it ranges somewhere below poverty, war and the rise in world population... but above a visit from your in-laws), but it is C E N S O R E D irritating that Fuji either cannot maintain or perhaps even create a dust free environment to produce these small wonders in.
Amazon offered €30 as compensation (or returning it of course), which seems not very much. Changing it for another would require being a member of the cult of third time lucky worshippers which I am not.
I think I am keeping it. We have sort of bonded now and I have ordered other stuff for it which is on its way. Nothing much. A new frock, a few energy bars and some steroids.
Further I really want to take it on a trip for the next three days and would not feel comfortable with that, if it was to be returned.
So apart from a bit of whining and crying (sorry about that
) let this be a WARNING - if you buy one of the remaining X100s be sure to check for dust specks. And dinosaurs. Maybe not in that order.
And, yes, the IQ (the camera's obvoiusly) is still wonderful.
Xpanded - a dusty old fellow feeling not so cool

I have no dust after 3 1/2 years. I don't use a lens cap either. I do use a third-party lens cap that fits on outer rim of the OEM vented hood. Of course this does not seal the front of the lens against dust.

Well, I just discovered a nasty dust spot on my used X100's sensor, aaargh!
I have to say the camera was not too expensive, but quite grimy and well, let´s call it well used.
But I'll not bother too much. Only visible in the lower left corner at F16 with uniformly light backgrounds.
But it's totally uncool though..... If only new ones were not so expensive on Amazon...745€ at the moment!
