Fuji X-pro or Sony A7c: which one?

On RP it isn’t much far from the left as on M5 🙂

You do have a good point. If I’m honest, I think the RP is a hell of a deal. I still like my Fuji APSC cameras better, but now that they have the 1.8 35mm and 50mm... it’s hard to argue against it as the best bargain camera on the market.

X-Pro3 was DOA to me with no decent 35mm equivalent and wider framelines in OVF. FujiNoFilm is for cropper mentality. Getting hosed on the wide end.

Meanwhile, I don't mind my RP with compact Vivitar 20 3.8 lens and its EVF. Small, weather sealed FF camera for under 1000 USD! Who needs same sized, if not bigger cropper after it?

Now while the EOS RP is indeed a stonking good deal, you do realize the EVF of the x-pro3 is at least as good, if not better than the RP's right?

EOS RP - 2.36mil dot resolution, 0.7x magnification
X-pro3 - 3.69mil dot resolution, 0.66x magnification

And then on top of that you get a superb optical finder for 35/50/75/90 equivalent focal lengths, and several tiny world class ultra-wide to wide lenses natively in fuji X mount.

Dunno if I'd call that getting hosed...

Personally, I'll take RP only and not magnificent, but totally sufficient EVF over limited to only 35mm and narrower lenses X-Pro 3 OVF (useless) with only usable EVF for lenses I use most. At any given day.

But it is all about OP here, not me.

I like to give Ko.Fe a hard time because we are both stubborn, but he has a point... if you like a wide angle of 28mm or more and you think the OVF is the main reason to use the X-Pro series... then the X-Pro3 is disappointing. Luckily I like 40-85mm equivalent lenses and I truly love it.

One thing about the RP... that EVF is actually big for a $999 (at launch) camera. No other company did that yet.

fellas, size and form are VERY important to me. i have ZERO interest in a standard-sized SLR/DSLR type body and lenses. my om-d e-m5 is just right for my medium sized hands, and minimalist style. for example, i like ultralight, compact fishing gear (my tackle box for ponds and streams is an altoids tin); i like lightweight and compact hunting rifles; i build and use lightweight and compact bushcraft knives; i like and use compact handguns; i carry compact, lightweight folding knives. and the older i get (i'll turn 70 in May, Lord willing), the more minimal i become. i broke my left wrist (dominant hand) in mid-october. this cut out spoon-carving, most bushcrafting, all fishing, painting, jeep driving, bowhunting, leather-crafting, knife-building, and shop activites, leaving me with photography as a daily hobby. this drove me back to rangefinderforum, looking for fresh challenges and inspiration and encouragement with cameras, rather than my principal photo tool over the past few years: my smart phone(s). any smart phone, no matter how good, cannot completely replace an actual camera. and i still love the RF form and handling. so, there ... 🙂

Then people's suggestions that you look into the Fujifilm X-E3 (or wait for the X-E4 that's supposedly coming very soon) is probably spot on for you.

I’ve decided that I have too much redundant Fuji gear... so I’m going to sell some and get an A7c. I will pair it with the Sigma 45mm 2.8 (need that aperture ring) which I just bought. I’m thinking having both the X-Pro3 and the A7c will be very fun to swap back and forth between to keep things fresh. I hadn’t realized how small the A7c is... not much bigger than a Sigma Fp. My personal gear fetish is size, so I had to have it.

Not sure if you made a decision... after years of shooting only film Leicas, I picked up a Sony A7rII three years ago. A lot of the internet seems to like to say the Sony cameras 'are too much like computers', but I don't find them that difficult. Sit down for an hour with the manual, set up the camera like you want, and then never go back into the menus again. The Sonys let you save personal setups on the mode dial (2-3 presets) and have lots of physical buttons. Built in dial for exposure compensation, rear button autofocus, dial for shutter and aperture. I usually shoot in aperture priority mode (just like my M7) and if I want manual, it's a quick toggle over. Again, there are loads of programmable physical buttons on the camera, so you need not go into the menus very much. I will say that I've never had an issue navigating any digital camera BUT Nikons - those menus are bizarre to me. Maybe I'm the exception 🙂

The Fuji lenses always looked great and compact to me. Good choices there.

If you haven't kept up on Sony news, Voigtlander makes a bunch of great (manual focus) lenses for the mount which aren't *too* big - only a bit bigger than the M mount equivalent. Zeiss Loxia lenses are also reasonably sized and very nice. Added bonus, you can get good deals on them used now that Sony/Voigtlander have released some lenses that out do the Zeiss ones. Lastly, if you want autofocus, Sony has also come out with a few top-tier, small-for-SLR style lenses in 24 and 35mm. The 28mm is also very compact and good performance for the price.

M lenses on the Sonys are a mixed bag. I only have a few that are decent on it, but it really depends on your lenses and threshold for performance.

My only real complaint with the system is that I much prefer RF focusing and framing to through the lens focusing.

I'll be 70 in May also. Almost didn't make it as I had a quad bypass on Dec 29.
I'm thinking of selling off the A7ii and maybe even my M3 w/Sumilux so I can get an A1. My grandkids move fast and with twins on the way in May they aren't going to slow down any.

Personally I think M43 is still very relevant for it's combination of smaller optics and good overall performance, and I expect to continue using Olympus (or whatever brand name they go with) cameras and lenses for the foreseeable future.

I have no regrets about also owning a FF Sony outfit, but I know my limits and while I think I'd love the performance of Sony's 24-70/2.8 G Master, it's a big brick of a lens.

I remember when I was a kid, and the grandparents would give me a whole bottle of Coca Cola and I'd be wired like Sonic Hedgehog or the kid in The Incredibles! Good times.

Been playing with a X-pro3. Definitely a very specialized camera that did away an issue I personally had with Fuji cameras (especially those with hybrid finders) - excessive redundancy.

Sounds weird but if you're fine with the X100 then the X-Pro3 may not be for you, IMO at least. If you're strictly after a Contax G3 then it hits the ball right out of the park.

I'm curious what you hope to find in an A7c that can't be delivered with the X-Pro 3. My dalliance with 'full frame' made me happy with aps-c...

Nothing... I just like having different cameras to use. I always use 3-4 cameras at a time just to keep things fresh for me. I photograph ever single day and really enjoy doing it. That's enough justification for me.

Fair enough. We all get the itch- nice to scratch it every once in awhile!
