Fuji X-T1 arrives. Seem to have a problem

I am prepared to concede that I may just be an idiot.
But the Fuji X-T1 arrived today. Last week, its 23/1.4 got here.
I charged the thing up. Formatted a memory card. Put the lens on.
And it won't focus. At least not with auto-focus.
I've tried the switch in both C and S mode. But it just doesn't do anything - except take out-of-focus images, unless I use manual focus.

Is there some menu setting that I need to toggle on/off?
I've just never run into anything like this before.

I forgot, is the 23 the lens type which has that manual focusing setup where if u want to go af u need to disable by moving the latch so the distance scale disappears?

This'll sound silly, but.... Is the lens (not the body) set in manual focus?
The focus ring has two positions, forward and back. If you can see the distance scale (not the DOF scale, but the actual focus distance numbers on the lens) it's in manual focus. Push the focus ring away from the camera to get back to the AF modes.

(the 14 and 23 both have this feature, olympus does the same thing on some of their lenses)

Do you have the lens cap on? On Fuji X-bodies, you need to have the lens cap on before they'll focus properly. This is because these bodies were designed to focus really well in low light.
