Leica, a small company, has held the RF market for a long time. Now a giant, Fuji, is answering a number of questions.. among them $$. I think things would be different if Leica hadn't be come the camera of "kings and sultans".

Had Leica introduced this camera, there would have been immediate celebrations. What and why took Leica so long?

Looking at this camera, and some others from camera manufacturers done in the past, this Fuji camera is done to make the engineers at the company happy. Show off what they can do, and pride in their work. Nikon did this with the S3-2000 and SP-2005. Cosina has done this for 10 years now, make cameras and lenses that Mr. K loves. Epson did it with the RD-1. Fuji went in this direction. It is a good one for us, the niche market that will appreciate this camera.

agree 100%!

The retro styling of the X100 takes the edge off of all the innovation that’s pack inside. And for good reason.
Fuji could of FREAKED everyone out by designing an exterior form factor that would have left many confused as to what they were looking at.
Stuff the innovation into a form factor that elicits a warm and fussy feeling; the simple, innocent, non-threatening look of an ‘old’ RF camera.
See? There’s nothing to be afraid of. It’s just an old RF type of camera.
The perfect, readymade ‘niche’ market in which to test the acceptance and viability of their technical innovations, i.e. primarily the hybrid viewfinder & pixel masking PDAF systems.

So well said. They're guinea pigging new viewfinder technologies on a built-in niche market: essentially us, here at RFF. Pretty smart, really.

It's undeniable that the combination of optical viewfinder, its augmentation with LCD overlay, and the large sensor is a gamechanger.

But where does you info about pixel masking PDAF come from? I thought it was contrast detection.

For all the furore, I would bet manual focus is done by means of the EVF alone. Altho, as with my Hexar AF, it's the auto option I'll be using.

I'm assuming that a variant of this technology will be implemented in the X100.
'Center weighted' PDAF system, along with PD center weighted manual focus patch/point (with focus confirm LED indication) is something a rangefinder user can 'relate' to. Perhaps CDAF for use with a movable focus point

My memory could be wrong, but I think the Hexar AF was also engineer-driven, wasn't it? 🙂

I suspect so- those engineers, there was a good article in Pop Photo in the 90s on this subject. The camera's that were made to basically "appease" the engineers and keep them happy. The Pentax LX was listed as one.
 
Contrast Auto-Focus is what they are using. I'm guessing that the refresh rate of the sensor / processor and lens/motor speed are an improvement on the Ricoh GXR and Leica X1 autofocus. There must be a downside to their single sensor phase detecting autofocus, or they haven't managed it on a larger chip..don't know.

Very cool indeed....
I wonder how well it will do it low light.... will it usable? Does it need bright in coming light?
Or, will the available light that is present be enough.t, If it is enough, why not just use the AF system?

Only time will tell.... I hope it is released early 😀

Masking image pixels = image degradation
How many pixels do you need to mask, to gather enough light in low light conditions, in order for the PDAF to work reliably?
Has it been confirmed that Fuji will NOT be using this technology on the X100?
Masking pixels would be considered ‘sensor customization’.
